Front jug removal 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Question. Can I pull the front jug (exhaust pipe stud repair) with the engine still in the bike or is it easier to pull the engine to do it? It's in the shop right now and the guy said he could probably fix it (read: I'll salvage what I can from your backyard mechanic attempt) . It'll be a winter project. Planning to check out the valve adjustment on both heads at the same time. Gonna follow Randy Fox's outline for engine tear down. Anything I should plan/look out for?

the stud is on the head. and you can pull it while it is on the bike.leave the jug alone. your going to need a new head gasket. and watch for the pins(2).if you have metal valve cover and spacer gasket you might use them again.(depends on year)

03'. For a factory fix I'm guessing the jug would have to be pulled as the guy said he'd fill the existing hole with weld then mill it flat. I know I would need a gasket or two in the process. Not sure if the job they're gonna do will be somewhat permanent (I know it ain't gonna be JBWeld ). Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Definitely an alternative. Probably spend that and more on a weld/mill job. I'll wait a see how the current fix works out. I bookmarked Pinwall Cycle as a potential source. Thanks JEastonjr! Have a great (hopefully assuming you are) Father's Day.

Because of my (self) over-rated mechanical skills it cost me $220.50 to repair my problem. Fortunately the mechanic says the stud ain't going no where. Plus it's a tad bigger than the original. My advice to other "mechanics" is before you tackle any job on your bike which you're unfamiliar with, check here for advice first, make sure you're comfortable doing it and get GOOD tools to work with. Or find a good dependable mechanic to do it for you or help you through it. I might be a class A Grandpa but my mechanical abilities need honing.

Just got it back today and I gotta put on the tank yet. No parades that I know of. Probably just go for an easy ride somewhere. I'll let you know, Don.
