Lock washer on front Drive pulley/Help 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Ok last week I posted on finding the nut on the drive pulley loose and catching it before it caused any damage. Here's my delima,I got the lock washer with the tabs to bend over the nut. But when The pulley is put on there are no splines left for the lock washer to fit on. I guess I'll have to put the compresson washer back on with lots of lock tite on the nut and torque it to spec's then take a punch to the same place that the factory did. Has anyone come across this problem and if so what did you do.
Thanks,Martin.

I would think if the shaft lenghts between the two year models was not shortened and the compression washer is approximately the same thickness as the tab washer it should work. Maybe you could have the pully nut machined down a few thousandths to compensate for the extra thickness of the tab washer if there is a difference. Like they say my .02.

Greg that would not work because all of the splines are taken up by the pulley. I think Niel has it right, which I was afraid of. It must have been one of Moma Yama's better idea's.
But thank you for your thought's.

Thank's I guess I'll do like I said above, torque it to 63flb.s then take a drift punch and a big hammer.

Is there a square groove machined in the shaft? Screw on the nut (I use an air impact wrench) and using a small punch or screwdriver, peen into the square groove, the thin machined area in the inside of the nut. Sounds complicated, but there is a thin place on the outboard side of the nut, right on the thread area. That is what locks the nut on (unless you put the nut on backwards....)

Your right fireman and no I didn't put it on backwards luckly. The factory manual shows that lock washer as a new part. Was just hoping it would work.

Does the tab washer have two tabs, one for the nut and one to bend over the pulley? I'm not understanding how this tab washer would work without engaging the shaft splines. What's it's second anchor point, with the nut being the first?

It has two tabs that fold over onto the nut to lock it in place. The inner circle of the washer has little teeth that slide over the shaft to keep the washer from moving. On mine there is no room for the washer to fit on the shaft. Hope that helps.

I went to a parts fiche and looked under both models, on the 1700 it did not have that lock washer, but did show it under the 1600 fiche.

and actually, if one does use the washer, you can get away with just bending one tab, so if need be, can use the unused tab a 2nd time around instead of buying one again. I never saw how the 1700 locked on the pulley shaft.
