electrical drain with ignition off 1 Year, 11 Months ago

I posted last week or so about a charging problem I'm having. What I've found is the bike is drawing 1 volt when the bike is turned off and killing the battery over night. The only added electrical parts are spot lights that turn on with the high beams.Any ideas where to start? It's a 2002 Road Star.

How are you checking for the draw to find a 1 volt draw? Usually you check for an electrical draw by amps. Then you pull fuses and unplug things like the voltage regulator until the draw goes away. When pulling fuses and unplugging things do them one at a time. If the current draw don't go away plug it back in and go to the next fuse/plug.

What I did was I disconnected the ground cable from the battery and connected the red lead of my multimeter to the battery and the black to the ground cable and it showed 1 volt.

Don't forget that you have a clock that constantly runs. Though it only draws a small amount if your battery is old or very weak it could be enough.

testing it that way, you might be reading the stored voltage of a capacitor. Capacitors are like batteries, they can store and hold a charge.

you have caps all over the dash ckt board, as well as the ignition module ckt board, and some in the rec/reg ckt board, so since all those are still connected to ground in one form or another, it's possible that the 1 volt you read is a combination of tiny charges still in them. Have you tested the charge system as per clinic tech article? Suggest ya do, but you really can skip the resistance test, and do the AC test and the DC test, but I would also suggest you take the battery to be load tested first to ensure that the battery is good. the charges system test should be done with a known good battery as well. If ya can, cancel the manual order, I see someone posted a link to one at no cost
