Got my bike back.....but 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Got my bike back today. (I posted about how it was submerged in water overnight a few weeks ago). Everything worked well and ran like a top for about 25 miles. Then it started sputtering and finally shut down. When I turned the key off and on there was an extended clicking from the fuel pump and would not kick off. I left it sitting on the side of road and went to get my trailer. When I got back - i turned the key - not clicking at the fuel pump and started right up. Loaded on the trailer and brought home. Since then I have tested twice in the neighborhood and it does the same thing. It starts right up and sounds and runs fine - but when it gets up to running temperature it shuts down - turn the key and get the clicking noise from the fuel pump - when it cools off a bit (20 minutes or so) the clicking stops and it starts right up only to shut down again a short while later.

I am wondering if I should replace Fuel pump or check for other other electrical problems??

Otherwise i need to replace one running light and the speedometer cluster is not working.

It definitely sounds like a fuel delivery issue goin on... I would first check the petcock filter... then if the petcock filter is good, then check the fuel filter... and dont forget about the vent line!!! if the bike got submerged under water and you dont have the check valve already removed from the tank vent line, then the fuel aint flowing properly... check that anyways... if you can, remove that check valve... you can find very good ways in the tech articles on what to do and how on that subject... I dont think you have a fuel pump issue, because it is clicking fast because it is not getting any fuel... I hope this helps...

I would check the relay circuit before I replaced a fuel pump. They are cheaper. Also hook a meter up to the fuel pump electrical lines and see if the voltage quits at the same time as the motor. If so you know you are on the right track. Good luck.

You may be plagued with electrical problems from now on..that would be the first place to look. clean all the connectors you can find as they corrode after being soaked that long..good luck....

Thanks - the fuel filter was just replaced. Where is the petcock filter? I will check out the posts on here about the check flow valve.

Where is the relay circuit for the fuel pump located?

Sounds like an air lock in the fuel line. If it quits after a short while then it must be using all the fuel in the float bowel but not refilling it. After the pump runs for a long time it must pump some more fuel into the bowl. Make sure all fuel line connections are tight. My 05 used to do that too but I finally got it stopped and don't ask me how.

since the speedo cluster isn't working I would suggest taking it apart cleaning it well you can use soap and water on it if its dirty inside even some rubbing alcohol then dry it really well and sit it in the sun, if you have air use air as well. i havent taken one apart but Max, I think his id is max chopper, took his apart and started a thread about it

It sound s like a plugged air vent to the tank. Also, If your speedo is toast, I have two from '05 and up. They will work on an '04 (swap one of the wiring connectors with yours) PM me if needed. Good luck. Oh yeah, do you have a riders bell on the bike? Maybe that will get rid of the gremlins you have???
