Fuel Pump failed 1 Year, 10 Months ago
My fuel pump failed have one on order, not ready to go pumpless yet.
Just wanted to let you guys know when I took it apart I found that the points had worn unevenly. The stationary one the most. One half of it was worn almost complete down,so if I had filed it flat there would have been almost nothing left of it.The floating one down to about 1/3.
06 model bought Nov.05 with 26,5000 miles.

Wow - that was fast. I just took the original off my '99 to go pumpless. 11+ years and 63,000 miles and it was still working good.

Can anyone tell if the points are closed everytime the pump needs to supply more pressure or are they always closed whenever power is supplied to the pump.

Re:Fuel Pump failed 1 Year, 10 Months ago
I've been doing some fuel pump research lately and ran across a Rokon forum. It seems that they use the same factory pump as the Roadie and they have the same issues with the points burning; just like in old pre-'70's points style distributors. It's a wonder that our pumps last as long as they do. The old cars had a capacitor (condensor) to cushion the arcing. There was some transfer of metal but the points would still look pretty good at 20k miles.
The Rokon guys have come up with two replacements; DocShadow's large vacuum pump but with a regulator added and a facet electric pump. I forget the model number but it seems to be the fix for them.

Hey BigBoy, do you have a link to the thread where they talk about the facet pump mod? do they use a regulator?
Question 2: How in the heck did you think to look in a Rokon forum for our fuel pump issues????

Hi Dave,WOW,you lucked out on that one.

BTW,not ready to do pumpless either so i cary a spare pump in one of my bags just incase it lets go on the road. Seems these pumps can fail in some cases at rpprox 10k miles and i have seen a few here in RSC reported as going 60K-100k+ miles on the original stock elec fuel pump so you never know when it will bite you/LOL!!!

I carry a pices of fuel line etc so i also have option to simply bybapssing the elec f-pump depending on situation at the time and or of i have trouble getrting any bolts loose on the stock elec fuel setup giving me trouble trying to swap it out if it dies on the road .

Re:Fuel Pump failed 1 Year, 10 Months ago
I hope I'm not beating a dead horse here, but...

I couldn't be happier since I went pumpless. It cost less, it's more reliable and I haven't had an episode of carb puke since. I also really like the look without that fuel pump/filter bracket and cover hiding the jugs.

My pump lasted for around 17,500 miles and just died. What!? Then, I found out how much mama Yama wanted for a new one! What!? So, they expect me to shell out a bunch of cash for a new pump every 17,000 - 25,000 miles? (I'm still a little bitter about this, if you couldn't tell.)

Yes, you do need the bigger carb inlet and float needle, a few feet of fuel line, cut down the main petcock tube in the tank and remove the rollover valve from the vent line or vent the gas cap to prevent a vacuumm forming in the tank. But, then you're done. No more issues, 'cause gravity's not going anywhere soon.

I know that some people feel uncomfortable make modifications to the original design of their bike. I understand that. The engineers spent a lot of time choosing to do it that way and they know more about it than I do, right? Sure, but after years of a design, the engineers and the manufacturers change those designs to make 'improvements'. That's because over time, flaws are found, realized and corrected, but, that's not what they call it. They call them 'improvements'. Well, that's all our pumpless modification is. An 'improvement' that won't cost you again.

Anyway, my $0.02.

Ratl.
