No spark on front cylinder 1 Year, 10 Months ago

I am going to invest in the repair manual tommorow but I have been reading the posts on this forum about ignition problems and I'm still at a loss for an answer. I ran into a light rain last friday on my way to work.I drove it home (50miles) and to the auto parts store but on my way back to the hose I lost the front cylinder. I have just under 12v to both coils, fuses are good, I charged the battery just to be sure, and when I swapped coils the rear cylinder still worked with the other coil and the front = no spark. I took out the ign module and checked all wire looms for wear, cleaned and reinstalled but still no spark. I noticed it was sounding different under load and loading up and dying at stop lights for about 10 days prior. Maybe time for a dyna 3000?

Koyote63. You'll get all kinds of suggestions, but when you say no spark, does that mean you checked your spark plugs (both of them) on the front jug? What do they look like? It may be possible the resistor in the plug boot has a problem. Also, what year is your scoot, what mods have you done, etc., so we have a place to start.

If it was loading up a dying could it be that the plugs are sooted from being rich or something and no longer working. I've read about coils on the Road Star leaking and sparks jumping all over when viewed in the dark.
If someone has a tach or old dwell meter that works off the ground wire of the coil you can use that to find out if the coil is getting a signal. You may be getting voltage to the coil but whether or not the igniter is opening and closing the ground circuit is another matter.
If after charging the battery, voltage is still only 12 volts that indicates that the battery is only about 25% charged. With that kind of voltage I'm surprised that the bike would even start.

Oops, I'm a slow typer, I didn't see the other post that came in before me. Good advice.

let me first say I am very grateful for this resource and your willingness to help fellow owners. Thank you for your support.
my bike is a 2002 with no engine mods that I know of. The front plugs look clean no erosion, light brownish gray deposit. no spark when I grounded each front plug to head while cranking. When I physically switched the coils I tried both sets of plugs on the front jug still no spark but all plugs fired on coil hooked up to rear jug. So the plugs and coils seem to be good. The voltage to the coil was measured with key in the RUN position but not started.

In the '99 circuit diagram the wire going to the igniter is either orange or green/yellow depending on which coil you're looking at. You could connect an ohmmeter to the coil end of the wire and to the igniter end of the wire and see if you have an open circuit. If you do then you could run what's called an overlay, which is just a new wire, from one point to the other. If the circuit is good then maybe borrowing an igniter from someone would show whether you need a new one or not.

unscrew the spark boot and check the resistors, if you look inside the boot, you will see a screw head, unscrew, resistor, spring and a flat piece should come out, resistor should read 10k ohms, if no good, just replace with, thinks it's a #6ga wire, then check continuity from one side of boot to other. I had a boot that corroded on inside, so no connection.

Like Erbman said, check the resistors in the boots. And it is #6 copper wire. Cut to the same length as the longest resistor and put back in,in the same order( minus the resistors)

So im guessing that the 1600 roadies have 2 coils and the 1700s have one..??? As you have swapped your coils and have the same problem couldnt you have a problem with the plug wires ?? There is nothing much worse than electrical problems..will be interesting to find out what you come up with for a repair..keep us posted !!
FYI,1700 has 2 coils too.
