Does the bike go into first and does not go? Or are you unable to shift into first?

This might sound stupid, but I like to start simple. Is it happening regularly or just that once? Maybe (just maybe) it lined up in just such a way that the teeth wouldn't mesh from the gears.. Next time it happens, apply steady pressure to shift to first then "slip" your clutch gently. If she goes into gear, I'd hazard to guess that was it. If not, then someone with more tranny experience can chime in!

Start with verifying that your clutch is adjusted correctly.

At the lever there is a rubber boot over the adjuster. Slide that back down the cable. To check free play gently pull on the clutch lever until you feel resistance. The gap between the lever end and the perch should be the thickness of a US Nickel, 1/8" approximately. If it is greater than that the clutch cable requires more tension. Loosen the large ring and then turning counter clockwise the tension will increase. In most cases one or two turns will be enough. Check the free play again. Once you have the correct free play tighten the large ring and replace the rubber boot. A little tip from an old timer, the slot in the cable adjuster should be facing down so moisture cannot travel down inside this opening into the cable housing. If you run out of adjustment at the lever there is an adjuster in the middle of the cable. Let me know if you need directions for that adjustment.
When shifting use some force these trannys are not delicate and a soft touch on the shifter is not helpful. Stomping is not required either, but don't baby it.

I never shift to neutral and never have in 51 years of riding.
Damn Curt, you're old!!
No not old, experienced. lol
I don't want to hijack this thread but I've seen that happen before. A carless driver almost rear-ended a rider. He was watching in his mirror and pealed off. He took the light but saved his life.
