Bike is Completely Dead - Where do I Start? 1 Year, 10 Months ago
I was putting the bike back together after a few mods and when I hooked up the battery, the bike was dead. Completely dead - speedo does not reset and the headlight does not even have a glimmer of light. Checked the battery at the auto shop and it tests good. Put it on a charger too. Checked the carb wires and all of the wires in the headlight bucket are connected. Checked the wire clips under the tank too. I recently ran my control wires internally in my apes. Could a short in those wires cause my bike to go dead?

Looking for ideas as to where I should look next. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ride Safe-

List the mods you installed. That way people will know what area to start instead of just guessing

Everything completely dead, means that no power is getting from the battery to the harness. I would look at battery connections, and main fuses first. Anything after that is pure guess work. Something is not plugged in or hooked up.

Suppose that would help.

Installed Apes - ran the wires internally.
New Grips/Mirrors.
Stainless Cables and Brake Lines.
Powdercoated the Headlight Bucket.

I agree. Just curious if there was something that I was overlooking. You just showed me the obvious - I need to check the main fuses. Will do that tonight.

Agreed. Sounds like a fuse (unless of course a wire became severed somehow). My only other suggestion would be to sell it to me for really, really cheap......

So is that the fuse on the negative battery terminal or is it in the box under the side cover? If it is the one on the terminal, am I correct in assuming that it is a "tube" fuse (rather than a blade)? Need to stop and buy one on the way home.

How about $15k? It is a Midnight with apes, and you saw the list of mods.

Check your fuses and then check the power connection from the battery to the starter. I had a Sporster that went completely dead and found out the conductor from the battery to the starter had corroded in half inside the insulation.

Good luck, I hate electrical problems.

Yep, sounds like the main fuse. I had the same issue at one time.
