Speedometer and fuel gauge question 1 Year, 9 Months ago
01-2010 I bought a new battery, today I had to have it replaced because it was fried. I noticed when I put the new battery in and hooked up the negative cable the speedometer and fuel gauge cycled one time and stopped. The key was not on and this is the first time I noticed it doing this. The fuel gauge also has not been moving at times when you first turn the key on. If you turn the key off and back on a few times it will work.

Is the speedometer and fuel guage supposed to cycle like this when you hook up the battery? I know there is a small draw on the battery to keep the clock and trip meter working.

My battery will be 6 years old next month and I can't remember what occured when I replaced it. Like you said the small draw is there to keep the clock and trip odometers current but there shouldn't be any power available to operate the speedo or fuel guage. Maybe there's a relay stuck closed. Did the odometer display light up also? How was the battery you replaced fried? That's not much time for a battery.

Allen I checked mine and the gauges don't cycle when I disconnect the negative cable or when I hook it back up. I also checked for current draw with my meter and when I fist hooked it in line with the meter set at 200m it reads 4.XX and then went to zero. After that there was no reading at all. I would check your switch it is getting power some how when it shouldn't. Sounds to me like you have a wire grounded some where that is hot. Stick a meter on the battery and see what the voltage is leave it there and come back in an hour and see what the voltage is. If you have a short the voltage will have dropped. Also take the negative cable loose and put the meter (amps) on the battery and the cable and if you see a current draw then you have a completed circuit some where. Then the only problem is finding it.
