smoke covered rear 4 Years, 11 Months ago
Sorry in advance guys, but this one has me stumped. My 05 1700 is constantly covered with buildup on the swing arm and right side of the rear fender. After several adjustments, I'm ready to give up and buy stock in soap and wax. Here are the basics of goodies: Poor Man's BAK, V&H shortshots, stock primary, 170 dj main, pms 3.25 turns out. I had someone else install the jet kit the first time, but the dj recommended settings were so far off, I had to start playing. The 190 is far too rich, and fouls plugs, as does the dj primary jet. I'm pleased with the performance now, but I'm tired of having to clean the bike every time I take it out of the garage. That cuts into my ride time. I may also have the start of the dreaded three little letters, as it sometimes will start to sputter on the rear cyl. It clears up with a little help from my right hand, but will do it again if I have to sit or a lot of city driving.
Thanks in advance for your help!

What's your elevation? The 170 DJ is pretty small if your not up there. Do you still have the stock pilot? What needle are you using and what groove and washer set up? Are you sure your choke is going all the way off?

I thought it seemed to small too, but the continued carbon concerned me. needle on the fourth groove, stock washer configuration. I'm not exactly sure of the elevation here in King, NC, but I believe it's around 900 ft. Yes I reinstalled the stock primary jet.

Just for giggles try going in 1 turn on your PMS and see what happens. And double check your choke.

Road Burner--

Like Musky said, the DJ 170 is pretty darn lean for your elevation...that's what I'm running, and I'm at 5,600 ft. When you say you're tired of cleaning the side of your bike, I'm guessing you mean from the pipes...? Is it spitting out black spots of liquid, looks like tar, but wipes off much easier? Mine was doing that when it was jetted too rich, but with a DJ 170, you'd have to be way rich on one of the other circuits. Like Musky said, could be the PMS...what groove is the clip on on the DJ needle?

The only black on my right side is from the rear brake The white wall always looks filthy. Sure it is not brake dust? The stock pads seem to make a lot of dust.

Ah ha! Bob, I believe you are on to something. You and Musky were both right. I cleaned it, went in a turn and went for a ride. I rode for about 30 min. using only the fornt brake and guess what, NO BLACK STUFF!!!! I should have done one at a time so I could tell the difference, but using the rear brake should show how much that helps. Any advice on a good set of pads that don't dust as much. Thank you, you guys are the best!

as far as your "lean" setting on the jetting but rich running - if you haven't done this check you float hight... a higher float setting will allow you bike to be rich on a lean jetting - now we can also spend all day arguing theory about which is better a "lean float hight and rich main jet" or a "rich float hight and lean main jet" my humble opinion is that you jet to your bike and if your bike is running good ... don't touch the damn thing! but anyone worth their weight as a mechanic will tell you on a venturi carb you set the float hight first then mess with the jetting... especially if your having problems getting your bike jetted ~Guido

Road Burner,

I am always worried that someone will be offended when something obvious is not obvious. Glad the issue was one that could be understood so easily. I still have the stock pads in and have to clean regularly especially since I am one of those guys that cannot go out unless the scoot looks perfect. I hope someone can recommend a high quality pad that makes less of a mess. It really blacks up the rear of a white bike and the more black the slower it goes.....Here go again, White Bikes are Fastest!!!

Ditto with cruiserbob.. brakedust is bad on that right side. I clean my whitewalls and thier a mess the same day. I was also wondering if they have a brake pad that didnt leave dust that bad but still had good stopping power?
