Battery Tender 1 Year, 9 Months ago
|
|
|
Has anyone had their battery tender light stay orange (meaning it's charging) for days. I think it may be an issue with the tender itself because I bought a brand new battery for the project bike and stuck the tender on it. 3 days later it was still indicating it was charging so I hooked it to my known good lawn mower battery and it does the same thing - it has been on there for a week and is still orange. Any ideas?

I went and got the instruction book that came with mine and it only said that the battery may be defective. I know I hooked mine up to my Van battery and it took two and ahalf days to fully charge. You might try unplugging it for a couple hours and then plug back up to see if it changes.
If a battery has very much sulfation in it it will take awhile to fully charge.. anywho my .03 cent.
How old is the tender? might be out of warranty, then you know it went bad.

If a battery is "stone cold dead" the tender will not do anything. Measure the voltage of the battery without the tender connected and measure the voltage with the tender hooked up and plugged in. The tender should show a higher voltage than just the bare battery.

If it's the little battery tender then it only puts out .75 amps which may not be enough. The Battery Tender Plus puts out 1.25 amps and mine has never had a problem charging. It doesn't have an orange light though, only a red and a green. I'll bet Deltran, the people who make it, will know.

Mine's the same as Scott's. Never had a problem with mine, at all!

It must be defective, my lawnmower and bike fire right up. I was just trying to keep them topped off while not in use. I have another one and will try it to see if it works. It is about 7 years old and is the waterproof one that used to spend all its time outside on my boat before I went to an on-board charger so it might be toast. Thanks for the input!

Just an update, the charger was in fact working, but just the light never turns green. I put the other identical one that I have on there and it immediately turned green. I put the meter on the original one and it is putting out the 800mA that it is supposed to. I just am not sure if it goes into storage mode like it is supposed to. How can I tell?

There may be a feedback circuit problem. Maybe the charger no longer knows when the battery is charged and just keeps charging. Could damage the battery over time.
If one is showing green and the questionable one isn't then check to see if the questionable one is charging at full output when hooked to the fully charged battery. If it is then it's bad.
With such a small charger it wouldn't hurt to make sure the battery is actually fully charged. With the battery disconnected and after charging let it sit for 30 minutes. The voltage of the battery should read 12.8 volts or higher. If it isn't then either it isn't fully charged or something's wrong with the battery.

Right on. I have one, and if the battery is stone-cold dead, it will not charge. So I stick it on my antique battery charger just long enough to get a bit of juice to register, and the tender will do it. I have the same issue with my high-speed, low-drag electronic battery charger. The new electronic units just won't recognize a completely discharged battery....

When the tender is actively charging the light is RED until it is finished and will then turn GREEN. An ORANGE light indicates there is a circut problem of some sort. Do like Scott said and hook the questionable tender up to a known fully charged battery and see what color the light is.
