tach obsession 1 Year, 9 Months ago
i got a question for you all.. i have been itching to put a tach on my midnight for some time now. They obviously do not come with a tach and i am really not sure why.Every car and truck i own has a tach in it,even with an auto. trans..i know we have a rev limiter and a new tach does not come cheap, but alot of folks swear by them and honestly its just a matter of time before i have one on my ride..why do you think they dont come with one from the factory..?? Are they a distraction..?? would it not help to know when you are in the 2000-2500 rpm range to shift..i shift my bike early and it does not lug or bog down..but shifting at a high rpm would be better for the bike..?? Any opinions..??

My opinion on why they are not included as standard equipment is that it is one way to reduce cost. Most crusiers are not considered performance machines and do not need or have tachs. Personally I have ridden my Roadie without a tach for about 26,000 of the 31,000 miles on the clock. Did I need it? The answer is no it is very easy to tell where this engine is happy. I added the tach out of chrome addiction and the need to continuously upgrade my scooter. I have the Baron's mini on the resevoir mount. Love it and do acutally look at it from time to time.

Since the bike is a cruiser, I never really saw the point in having a tach. Now what blows me away is why some bikes don't have a freeking gas gauge. I know a few Suzuki models that don't even bother with gas gauges.

The original owner put a tach on my bike, so as far as I am concerned it came that way. The tach is from Cobra and is mounted on the left riser. I can see the tach on the road just by moving my eyes, I have to move my head to read the speedo. When you are familiar with what the RPM should be for various speeds then you don't have to look at the speedo. I love haveing the tach!

My MotoGadget Motoscope has a tach in it but I never look at it. A tach on our ride is useless. You will know it if you are revving it too high or the rev limiter kicks in. It pulls so hard you have no need to keep it in a particular rev band like some peaky engines.

Gas gauge is useless too, odometer is much better. Know your MPG and then use the odometer as m/c gas gauges are notoriously inaccurate. I just open the cap and look in.

Had this one for a year now, many compliments. As Cliff said just move your eyes.Chrome is top notch, as is the price. No wires on the bars.It will work with the Yami windscreen. Like Bob, it was as much "chrome addiction" as function.

To each his own but I have no use for a cruiser without a fuel gauge. I don't want to play the number game with the odometer. The minute mine stopped working I put a new sending unit in. Very usefull gauge. m2c

I added a Baron's 3" bullet tach. I like the looks of it and the information it provides.
I have it mounted between my DT risers. I don't find it a distraction.

Here's a picture of my installation:

I commute daily so I rack up the miles real steady. I've had two Yammies without tach's now. I don't really miss it anymore. I go more by feel and sound. Been thinking about an oil temp gauge though especially on those hot days in traffic. We all have our little idea of what the bike should be. Yep - the fuel gauge has spoiled me and would not want to give it up.
