I used the plastic knob at the carb end rather.

Started it up and drove to work this morning. Ran like crap, kept popping, spitting. Turning the pilot back to 3/4 out. Seems to run the best that way even though I can smell it's a bit rich at that setting.

Gonna look around for a Mikuni 42 choke cause I suspect that may be my problem. Otherwise it doesn't make sense.

Doc, which plunger did ya use on the choke cable end? the stock carb plunger is too small, need to use the plunger that came with the 42. ya got something going on to have to be that rich to get rid of the problems. I'm running a smaller pilot than that and a bit more than 1.5 turns out, with the 25 I was at 2 turns
Hmmm, have you tried just disconnecting the tps, let the ignition use wot by default?

Yes you're correct the plungers are noticeably different and I did use the plunger and spring from the 42 on the stock cable.

I'll try disconnecting the TPS.

Let's hold off on other suggestions (I do appreciate the help) until I get a new cable. I'd like to eliminate that variable. I know that I was also slightly rich with the stock carb so 2 + 2 is leading me to believe that it's the cable as that and the TPS are the only thing common to both carbs. It does have me puzzled though. I don't know why it would not function correctly with the 42 end .. and the knob does stand off a bit from the bracket.

Thanks,

Going for a ride across the border .... se ya'll later.

The nut that screws into the carb is different on the OEM CV cable. It is deeper and has a step in it which makes the length of cable different than the 42 cable also the spring is a different length. I was going to try and use the OEM CV metal nut to replace the broken plastic 42 one and they are different length as well. JP Cycles, Dennis Kirk and a few others have the Mikuni cables I got mine from Dennis Kirk. Guess I am off to order a choke cable nut now. Good luck with yours buddy!

Just started looking on line for a choke cable as there's nothing in town.

Interesting observations on my 240 K (150 m) run across the border and back. It was about 25 C (77 F). In total it took me less than 3/4 of a tank (visual estimation), slightly less than normal. More interesting is that going down I kept the speed under 100 kph (62 mph) vs 120+ (75+) on the way back. It was evident that I used much less gas going down than I usually used under the same circumstances; coming back seemed somewhat 'normal' usage.

I expect I'm seeing the effects of the height of the needle in the main at the two different speeds.

These are casual observations and once I have it set up I need to do some mileage runs.

what they say in the manual is quite true as far as needle clip position, mine has always been on 2nd groove regardless when I had the 97 needle or now the 98 needle. I did try this test for a while, on 2nd clip at a solid run of 80mph got 40mpg, at 65, 70mph 50mpg. went to 1st groove, 80mph now at 45mpg, 65, 70mph no change still 50mpg. Bu did notice that if cruising at 75mph if 1st groove set-up, and wanted to pass, would need to drop to 4th gear. on 2nd groove set-up cruising same 75mph, no need to down shift. for me the additional 5mpg was not worth it to give up the passing capabilities in 5th, so stuck to the 2nd groove set-up.

I did a lot of runs and many many different jetting combo's and afr runs. my cruise mpg test runs were at a minimum 100 to 125 miles holding speed 65, 70mph and no more, and would do a few of them as well to check for consistency. I spent about the 1st six months playing and testing and comparing my mental notes, comparing to the data from dyna runs as well. yeah, some could say I was a bit anal about it, but it was fun and quite interesting to see how small changes affected performance from the low end to wot. now I just enjoy the ride.

Well I went and ordered my parts for the carb today. Ordered two of the replacement nuts for the choke cable seeing as how they are plastic and break so easy and a plugger spring because the old one was rusty. Also ordered two needles, a 98 and a 96, two more main jets a 170 and a 160 so that give me a full set 160, 165, 170, 175, 180, and a 185. Also ordered two pilot jets so I will have 22.5, 25, and a 27.5. I should be all set to test verious configurations when I get it on now. The fun will start then yes Erbman I am just as anal as you are when it come to my carbs.

trust me Curt, you won't need the 96 needle, nor any larger main past a 167.5 nor a pilot past a 25. anything past those, look for leaks. I was at 11.6 afr at wot with a 165 w/yost tube using the rc-2000 filter. I only know one person using the 96 needle, but he has a full stage IV set-up, he also has done over 200 runs on his friends dyna as well. was a new toy at his friends shop so he had full use.

Waiting on my choke cable .... from Maxair. Probably another week or so before it, and some other stuff , arrive and I go pick it up.

Another excuse to miss work and go riding.
