Carb adjustment problem 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Are you suppose to be able to screw the PMS screw all the way in while the bike is running and still be able to drive the bike? If I back the screw out about 3 or 4 turns the bike rpm speeds up. No change from set snug to 3 turns out!

Any ideas would be appreciated....

brotherkram,
I don't know if it will run with PMS all in but if it is stock carb and in too far it will not take the thottle well at all. I don't think you could even drive off with it in all the way. I think adjusting PMS for max rpm is a good starting point. If yours is drivable with the PMS all in then I think you have another problem with it running way too rich.

Because it runs and drives with it all the way in I would think I have another problem somewhere. It has different pipes and filter. hk 3 inch pipes. Jets are 165 , clip on the 4th from the top. I have no idea but it does not seem right.
Maybe a air leak??? Manifold?????

Yes,you should see motor idle speed rpm drop considerably or even stall when PMs is almost closed or fully closed/lightly seated.

Possibly idle speed is set higher then it should be so throttle slide in carb is higher then normal & throttle plate is also open further then it should be too.

Then in that case the motor would mostly be idling on the main carb circut which is why PMS ajd didnt affect it that much vs with motor idling mostly or fully in idle /pilot circut with lower idle speed adj dropping throttle plate futher back into idle/pilot circuts.

I have unb into that issue before from time to time.

Also, poss idle circut is clogged in a way PMS has not much affect but motor is still getting fuel to idle opn from idle/pilot circut, but i dont know if that can in fact happen that way.

It sure sounds like it's too lean from what I'm reading. If it's an aftermarket airbox along with those H-K pipes then a 165 main sounds too lean to begin with. You may only need to come up on the main unless this running issue just suddenly started then look hard for a vacuum leak. (I would get some starting fluid and check for a vacuum leak anyway.)

you should start with a set point with the pilot screw, somewhere between 2 to 2.5 turns out from a light seat. go ride to warm the engine to proper temps, 10, 15min. ride, not at idle, then adjust the idle screw. after that, you have an option, to proper set the pilot screw, start turning it in slowly until there is a change (could be a very subtle change) then start turning it out till there is a change (keep count at this point of turns) then set it in the middle of these 2 points. Both pilot adjustment and idle screw adjustment should be done on a fully warmed engine.

Re:Carb adjustment problem 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I did some more checking for air leaks and everything good...no leaks....I did run it a little more and the engine is running hotter. Must be lean...
I will try to explain from the start what I did. First I bought new pipes and a air filter. Air filter is about 2 inches wide by 6 inch diameter ...Round...Looks good I think.. I bought a Dynojet kit from the local yamaha dealer. Jets included are the 160, 165, 190, 195. So per the instructions I went right to a stage two 195 jet. Everything ran good....but accelerated doogy.....Dropped back to a 190 jet and everything ran good. Accelerated good, gas milage around 42. Left alone for about 1500 miles then noticed exhaust was really black. Heavy .. So I decided to change the jets again down to a 165 jet. Started right up....seamed quicker.Needle set on the 4th groove from the top. Exhaust pipe by head discolored alittle...by a little I mean very little....As far as acceleration it was really good , so I decided to try moving the clip to the 3 rd groove . Now all hell is breaking loose.....I can not adjust the pms and it seems to be running hot. exhaust pipe turning blue by head. Have not taken for a ride because I know it is running hot and i can not adjust the pms so it seems senseless to go for a ride.
My question is this. Have I been trying to adjust the wrong thing.. Maybe my main jet at 190 was ok. Full throtttle test at the 165 jet clip 4th grove seamed ok. But pipes turning color. Full throttle test with the 190 was fine too. But I am creating allot of carbon buildup. Any help will be appreciated....
