My Redneck Monoshock Project 1 Year, 1 Month ago
I didn't see another place to post this, I hope it's ok here. Just something I've been working on here and there.

I finally got some of the pictures together from the build I'm doing right now. I decided to tear down my 2004 Chopper, use what I can, and sell off the rest. Here's some pics of my progress:

Redneck Monoshock Frame and fender blank:

My Chopper, a parting shot...

330 rear wheel/tire finally arrives, after waiting 5 months!

Doing some mods to the frame

Starting to look like a bike:

Oil tank is retarded close to the engine, had to do some cutting here

Much better...

Gas Cap

I'm not thrilled with a 3/8" bolt holding my axle in, so I'm reaming it out to 1/2"

It's been a while since I updated this thread. Didn't work on the Redneck much this summer, I was busy riding and rebuilding my Yamaha, but I finally got back on it last night. A few things I did this summer that I never updated:

I rough cut the rear fender just for an idea of how I'm gonna mount it.

First I made a circle template and made progressively larger cuts to get in the ballpark.

Now I lay it on the swingarm with a spacer to set the distance from the tire, and determine where I need to weld bungs or tabs to mount it. I will probably end up cutting the rear into a reverse half-moon shape, but I haven't decided yet.

I had an issue with the neck being an odd size. I still haven't gotten to the bottom of this, but basically the stem was bottoming out before it was putting any preload on the bearings. I made a larger dust cap to take up the slack. This one is aluminum, but I may make the finished product out of harder stainless so there is no issue with galling between the spacer and the top tree...

As you saw earlier the oil tank needed to be moved. I ended up cutting the whole mount off the frame and I'll drop it lower, pending my exhaust choice so I can check for clearance. I cut the tank tunnel deeper so I could slide it rearward a little more for clearance around the heads.

For my gas tank, I'm still lost in space. Last night I tried making a wire frame to help come up with a design. I made some progress but nothing I really liked. My backbone is huge, 36" from the neck to where my nuts sit, so it's hard to get a tank on there that doesn't look like you strapped a beached whale to the bike. I saw this bike this morning, and I'm diggin the tank, what do you guys think??

Custom made front drive sprocket from 3 Guyz with a locking plate and the larger spline area. With the economy and end of the chopper craze it's damn hard to find off the shelf parts for fat tire bikes...

Got my gas tank back from Ron Pogue at Vision Design Studios. I could not be happier with it, Ron did an excellent job, and the one off tank came back looking exactly like the template I sent him.

I started out with a wireframe template as Ron suggested. I kept it simple and used baling wire and hot glue. After a few iterations, here's what I came up with:

Once complete I made a template of the backbone and engine heads and boxed it all up to goto Ron.

Unfortunately, on the other end, this is what Ron took out of the box:

Somehow, the dude got that thing back together based on some pics and videos I sent him, and managed to make me a tank that was pretty much exactly what I envisioned.

I wasn't sure how I was going to do the rear of the tank as far as blending it into the narrow frame, so I had him make it short. I've since decided that I'll cut up the back a bit, slim it down and extend it to flow into the seat.

The lower forward panels will be smoothed out with bondo to a concave shape.

Next was to align the rear and get the sprockets lined up. I was having trouble finding a large enough offset front sprocket, so I had 3guyz custom make one for me. Very nice and reasonably priced. Using a piece of angle stock and a laser I got the sprockets aligned, then cut some new spacers. The tire is now centered on the backbone. I have no idea what I'm going to do for a transmission pushrod, it's way out there. Another part I'll have to make.

I've also got an issue with the sprotor caliper. At 7/8" it's too far from the mounting tab on the frame. I may weld a spacer to the frame tab, then weld another support back to the swingarm, making a triangle. Not too clean, but nobody can see under there anyway. Any suggestions here are appreciated!

Now to start mounting the rear fender, something I've been dreading. I started with a blank and made some initial cuts. The issue I have is that the fender is frigging huge, wide, and flat on top. That makes it really hard to get a pleasing shape. I don't want to do a point, everyone does the point. I like the reverse cut, but can't seem to get it to look right. Lots of work to do here.

And where is the bitch going to sit? Not much space back here.

Tonight I mounted the gas tank and welded on the mounting tabs. It took me 4 hours, and I happened to catch an episode of OCC last night on my Netflix where Paul did it in like 3 min. Oh well, I guess that's why they make the big bucks.

I tore the bike down again so I could take it over to my warehouse where I keep the welder. This is my shit hole garage, which is actually cleaned up from what it was 2 weeks ago!

The front mounting tab needed to be mounted off the downtube, so I had to fab a little bracket and weld that to the tank mount. The rear tab needed to be notched to fit around the top motor mount. I used a little piece of baling wire to copy the curves of the frame tubes and transfer them to my templates.

Rockin' the plasma cutter. This thing is awesome...

Tabs welded on:

Front tab with bracket/extension:

From below:

Tank mounted up. I intentionally mounted the tabs about 1/4" low, I will shim it up with spacers when I'm all done. This makes it much easier to get it on and off, since it sits so close to the top triple tree. I was going nuts trying to figure out a way to match the front with the downtube, and finally threw that idea out. I really like the way it looks like this.

Here's one idea for how the finished tank will look at the rear. Once the seat is on it should flow nicely.
