I was looking at that SSCC because I want a retro look and stumbled across a hypercharger for a really good deal, so I got the hypercharger. I think it is retro looking also. I had one before and liked it. Havent recieved this one to install yet.

Thanks guys, but kits are not on the menu. Too expensive, by the time they are shipped to England a 200 dollar part becomes a 200 pound sterling part, then there's shipping, import duty and VAT at 20%. So all I need is the best S&S filter in terms of airflow for a 1700 roadie with up-jetted carb and open pipes.
DocShadow says the super e, but S&S make several filters for the super e. Is the filter element the same in all these?

Yorkie, you can use the backplate from any S&S that is flat across the back. Occasionally these can be found by themselvess on Ebay for a very low price. The backplate will have to be modified to move the intake hole up 1 in. This is done in order to gain clearance for the fuel tank. Once the backplate has been modified, you can use any S&S cover with a 3 bolt pattern. I actually have 2 covers that I can interchange for a different look. The one with the gold eagle that you see in my sigpic as well as one with the S&S logo. Click on the link below my sigpic for pics of how I did mine on my Photobucket site. If you have any questions PM me, I'll be glad to help.

It's my fault. I've re-read my original post. I used the word "kit", meaning S&S kit.
But all I'm really interested in, is the airflow, and which of S&S Cycle's air filters provides the best results with open pipes and up-jetted carb on our engines.
Stinger, thanks for the info and link to pictures, that looks a lot like what I did to the Vulcan back in 2000.
All fabricating of mounts, adapting existing backplate is no problem.
I just want to know if there is a particular filter that suits best. Looks like it'll be a Super E type. Interested to know why that's better than the one they make for Keihin cv carbs, unless the reality is that as far as airflow goes, they're all pretty similar?

To be honest, when I did mine, airflow didn't really matter to me. I've just always loved the look of an S&S. The S&S is more open than the stock filter, so I figure it has to flow better. That being said, moving the intake hole away from the center probably disturbs the air flow, but the look is what I was after. Btw, I only invested about $40 in it. Bought it all on Ebay & did the fab work & welding myself.
