Fiberglass Packing 4 Years, 9 Months ago
|
|
|
I modded my Roadhouse exhaust this weekend. The existing fiberglass packing was baked crispy black. To remove that fiberglass meant destroying it.
I ended up wrapping the baffle back up using plumbers pipe wrap. It's fiberglass, but not nearly as dense as the original. I wrapped it a double layer and ran a little masking tape around it to hold it in place.
Anyone see any problem with keeping it this way? My other option would be to order some replacement packing from Roadhouse. Are there other alternatives?
Thanks all....greeny

Did you check any auto parts stores for the packing?

I only checked the Advance Auto Parts near my house. They only had fiberglass cloth for patching an auto body. They also had some heat tape for wrapping header pipes. Both of those items were very thin.
The Roadhouse packing I pulled out was approx. 1" thick. My main concern with what I've done in putting in the plumbers wrap is that it could possibly melt from the heat. It's design is for water pipes which don't get near the temps of an exhaust.
I'll check with some local bikes shops to see if they have something that would work better. That or just get some original packing from Roadhouse. Might have to order a performance baffle to go along with it.

I've used both the pink insulation and the MC wrap.
The MC wrap is denser and I found it held up much longer than the pink.

Greeny, go to any bike shop and get FMF 4stroke packing. Very dense, last ALOT longer than regular fiberglass insulation, and not expensive. I've used it for years in my repackable mufflers/silencers.BB

Thanks for the tips everyone! I think I'll stay away from the pink stuff though. I just can't put anything pink on my bike....even if it's inside the muffler!!
I'll keep it as is for a couple of months and then pull apart to see how much it broke down.
Thanks fellas....greeny

Throw away the pink stuff and wrap them with chicken wire, sounds great and doesn't smell or taste like chicken. Control the sound by how tight you wrap the pipe, lasts a long time. Roadhouse Brand, nice pipe but the plating sucks.
