Drill the Stock Exhaust (stage 1 6 Years, 6 Months ago
This thread discusses the Content article: Drill the Stock Exhaust (stage 1

I have a '04 Midnight Star with stock exhaust system. I am considering this modification in lieu of purchasing aftermarket mufflers. My question is whether this will have any effect on my basic warranty. I want a better sound, but do not want to void the warranty. Please advise.

Welcome to the clinic WB.

Yamaha does not void the warranty for this mod, but I am certain they will void any warranty on the pipes. Some dealers will tell you that the warranty is void if you modify the bike, but Yamaha has never said that. If your dealer tells you this, find another dealer.

Most dealers won't warranty a mod, but will warranty everything else.

I have had warranty work done on the bike in my sig, which has clearly been modified extensively.

I did the same to mine, then sweated bullets worrying about when I brought the bike in for the next scheduled maintance. The only comments I got from the dealership was from the machanic who said he liked the way it sounded better then the stock sound. I got brave then and told him how I had removed the AIS but put it back on before I brought it up to them. I said I get a little backfire when I shut it down with the AIS on, so he told me to take it off again.
