The tank is vented, but its not really enough for running without a fuel pump.

But, some have gotten away without it.

I drilled out the tank vent as I don't like the idea of a vented cap with custom paint.

Ok,
I'll try venting....
So the best or only way is with the cap modification?

Gosh...
I wish I could type quicker to keep up with you guys.
Doc where did you drill the vent?
I thought it was a piece of rubber hose with a check valve.
I'm sooo confused!

The vent tube is in the front of the tank ... it's what the rubber tube connects to. It comes out of the tank and makes a 90 degree turn towards the front.

You need to carefully straighten the tube and drill a larger hole all the way through. It's not for the faint of heart as you can break the tube if you flex it too much and break the drill bit when drilling (it happened to me).

Oh, Ok
so basically the hole in the tank is smaller then the tube that bends toward the front.
So I can drill it out to almost the same size as the ID of the pipe.
Am I understanding this correctly?
Do I reuse the check valve?

Throw away the check valve .... that may also be your problem ... they tend to stick shut.

You can drill out the vent tube as large as you want but obviously not as large as the ID of the rubber tube. ... you're limited by the diameter of the vent tube.

Ok,
thanks for your help..
I know a lot of what we just talked about has been a repeat for you, so I appreciate the time you have spent with me on this. I will up the float level, drill the vent tube, and chuck the check valve.....
Now I have something to do on this rainy Saturday.

No ... do the venting first ... that may be your problem.

If the venting does not work, then up the float level.

I had the same problem Rotopilot. Put in the 2.5 mm valve seat, did all the venting, fixed the gas cap, adjusted the gas level in the carb and still ran out of gas on top end. If I had less than a 1/2 a tank of gas the problem was worse, it would starve for fuel above 70 mph. Got me in trouble once when passing a car and starved for fuel about 75. That did it for me, back to the fuel pump. No more problems.
