Getting fuel without the pump hasn't been a problem for me either.
At least not yet. Probably need some more evaluation time.
I don't even have a vented gas cap.

Ok,
I know this is an old topic for some, but.....
I installed the 2.5 float needle assembly.
Set the float level between 1mm-2mm "read at the back side of the float bowl"
Took out the inline screen.
Shortened the fuel line so it has a nice straight shot to the carb.
AND.....
She starves for fuel at high cruise.
Any ideas?
Oh ya.. she's a 2003 Midnight Star
Ok... I drilled out the vent tube to just about the same size as the ID of the pipe.
Raised the fuel level to just about level with the back mating surface, maybe 1- MM higher.
I even tried running it without a gas cap!!!!
She still dies. Just made it about 2 blocks.
I hate to put the pump back on...
Any ideas?

looks like all you have left to do is adjust the float, you sure don't have a venting problem if it still starves with the gas cap off..has to be a restiction in the supply or the float level..you mentioned putting the pump back on and it was ok.. I assume you did this with the 2.5 valve assembly. the thing is the 2 to 3 lbs pressure the pump puts out is forcing the float to allow a little more gas in the bowl that gravity feed can't do.. I think you need to raise the float..

Suggestion: Set your bike up as level as you can. Turn off the petcock and remove the fuel hose. Get a new piece of hose long enough to hang into a can and turn on the fuel. (Not on reserve) If you get good flow then plug on your fuel filter and see what kind of flow you get through it. May need a new filter or maybe a different brand that flows better.
Basically you just want to narrow done WHERE the problem is. Tank, filter or carb.

Ok, I'll try the filter next.
I had the hose off the carb with no filter on and the fuel flows really well.
So I will check it with the filter on and see what that does.
Thanks.

Yes I put the pump back on and left the 2.5 valve.
I hate to raise the float anymore because it is already at the rear mating surface of the bowl or even a little higher...
Like I just mentioned in the earlier post, I will check the filter.
I had put a new one on of the same design as the original , but never checked the out flow.

Ok,
with the filter on, gas cap on, she flows like a garden hose.
Must be in the carb.
On the idle circuit its fine,
and when I increase the RPM
and hold it there while sitting in the garage
its fine,
but when I start to open the throttle while moving,
the bike starts to stutter, then it backfires a few times,
then dies completely.
Then it takes a while before I can start it.
I'm trying to stay in good spirits here.....
but I'm starting to lose hope.
Sincerely yours: ROTOPILOT

the symtoms you describe sound exactly like loss of fuel, It has to be the float either not set right or sticking. I would raise it up a bit.. IMHO. do a bit of searching on the forum, I know Doc has outlined the float setting very precise in a couple of posts..I don't have the stock carb so I'm not up on the measurements..

You know I never thought of the float sticking....
I wonder
When I ran it in the garage I kept the clear hose on the drain pipe and watched the fuel level, and it dropped a little but never went way down.
And I would think if it was sticking it wouldn't matter if I was riding or not.
Do you think the level is too high?
