Doc,
It isn't hard for me to tell when I'm rich in the pilot circuit. Although I have always had to choke it to start, if I leave the choke on full for more than a few seconds it always fouls the plugs and it takes several miles of bucking and popping before the plugs clean themselves off.
Gram is indeed a guru when it comes to carb jetting. When I ported my manifold I kept fouling at the factory setting on the PMS. He took the time to explain to me, (on the phone!!!), that I would need to lean the pilot circuit after porting. I was way off on my assumption that I would need to richen the mixture. The help this and the road star riders forum has given me and the great bunch of folks that frequent here are unmatched anywhere.

I have an '04 with the Baron's BAK & Propipe. I live at 4500 ft in Utah. I have the 172.5 main, 4.5 on the clip and the stock pilot, and 3.5 on the PMS. I am about to turn 10k on the clock. Mine coughs through the carb until warm. Very slight pop on hard decel. 53mpg at 70mph, 46 at 75mph, 38 at 80mph. That is indicated on the speedo for the MPH. That is 2 up riding. Just thought I would share.

Here is a question for you…I just recently purchased Vance and Hines longs shots installed with a Twin Velocity Air Cleaner I had the dealer install all the
Gear, and it runs beautiful and loud…until the other day I was out riding and now getting some backfiring on idle and low rpms. Any idea what it may be? And yes the AIS kit was installed.

Air screw maybe coming loose. See if you can find out what setting they put it at and then check it. I really recommend the MAXAIR PMS screw. Makes these things less likely and easier to fix when they do.

Thanks Crash
It has been a while since I have worked on a bike.......20 years or so. where is the air screw located on the carb? is there a link you can send so I can take a look and get an idea what i am doing.

I reciently found that backfire through the exhaust is caused by an air leak in the manifold, I had changed mine to a Nemisis and the leak was inhanced by cold weather.
PMS screw not set correctly with a HOT motor or RPM's set too low during adjustment. If you raise the RPM's sometimes that helps to loose some of the
backfire.
Carb cough is within the idle circut and drawing air from that little bastard pilot air jet in the mouth of the carb. Proper pilot jet and PMS turns will help the cough through the carb, plugging and or drilling the pilot air jet will take things a step further in richening this circut. This is only my experience.

Well after looking at the carb......the hoses seemed to be a little twisted and pinched, so I brought the bike to Yamaha and one of the vacuum hoses had a hole in it from laying on something hot......that’s where the backfiring was coming from. Now the bike runs like a top....
