cobra exhaust 6 Years, 4 Months ago
New member. I recently purchased a 2001 RS with Cobra slash cut drag pipes, cobra jet kit and K&N filter. Bike runs great but on decel pipes have a raspy sound. What to do? I have dyna 3000 and AIS removal kit ordered. Will this application affect the sound of the pipes or the sound at idle? The idle sound is relatively meek and mild, to what I would like. I want to rattle windows and make my harley friends envious.
Bike backfires occasionally through carb and sometimes dies at idle. Do I need to adjust PMS?
Please email to johnnycpeterson@yahoo.com.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Hey JCP
I just put a pair of SHOGUN SLASHERS on my "01"and went for a ride with my Har'dly buddy. Every time we would stop at a stop sign, I would ask him "is your bike running?"

Johnny,

"pipes have a raspy sound"

You don't want to hear this but that's how they sound. You could make them sound 'how you like' by trying different types of internal baffles, but it would be a trial and error exercise.

To make them "rattle windows", if possible, remove the internal baffles. Be aware that without the backpressure afforded by the baffles you will lose some bottom end (torque).

Backfiring through the carb means the air/fuel ratio is incorrect. You should be able to cure it by adjusting the PMS. Check out Gram's article on the PMS at http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/95/96/

You may have also not rejetted correctly. What are your jets and PMS setting?

I had "Colbra" slash-cut mufflers with stock headers and never had problems with carb backfire until I changed to a full Roadhouse system from heads to tailfin.

The Colbra system sounded tinny and raspy until I open the throttle and it was loud ! Nobody wanted to ride behind me because of the annoying sound they made.

To make them louder you'll have to get in there and take out the fiberglass packing (if there's any). Have fun

Steve,
I want to be able to ask my hardley buddies the same question. I bought my bike with the Cobras. I am after the most radical sound I can get. It seems alot of people like Shogun. Thanks for your reply.

Doc,
You're right, I hated to hear that the Cobra's just shound raspy on decel. I did remove the baffles and the sound was worse. As you said the performance suffered and I re-installed them. I will experiment with baffles and if I can't get the sound I want, I will have to replace the Cobras. I bought the bike with the Cobras; Cobra jet kit; and K&N filter kit already installed. I do not know the carb settings, but when I install the Dyna 3000 I will ckeck all. Thanks for your input. Any suggestions on pipes will be appreciated.

draco,
I can't live with the tinny, raspy sound. I guess I will replace the pipes. Thanks for your reply.

JCP,

Suggestions on pipes OOOOOOOh

Sound is really subjective. What's sounds kickass to me might be pathetic to you.

The best thing I can suggest to you is to try to hear various styles on R*s; not HD's as they would sound different.

I have both Powershots and Nasties. I like them both but the Nasties have a bit more bottom end sound to them. But on the other hand, they are loud. I had to make my own baffles to quiet them down.
