WTF?!... Gas Cap Blew Up Today! 1 Year, 7 Months ago
|
|
I know big twins are prone to vibrating nuts and bolts loose but a gas cap??? I couldn't believe it today when my gas cap just flew off and blew apart into about 5 different pieces! Fortunately I was just accelerating away from a stop light so I wasn't going more than about 20mph, but the only thing I can determine are the two screws that hold the who assembly together, came loose and dropped inside the tank, then the rest of it just flew off!
I was fortunate that I found the pieces I did, since they were scattered all over the intersection in traffic, but there still seems to be a couple missing and I haven't had a chance to fish around inside the gas tank yet. I have a sinking feeling I'm not going to find all the parts and since the stealer only sells the unit as a whole for $100, I'm wondering what my options are. Does anyone know of any other caps that will fit the R* that are less expensive? I don't really care if it locks or not. ...Or maybe someone who would sell a used one? I'm sure I can still use the tumbler from mine.

The world breaks everyone, and afterward, *some* are strong at the broken places.

Yep, that is a known "issue" with Yammi gas caps. The screws will loosen over time. Hate that happened to you.

I had no idea that could happen. I vented my gas cap but can't remember if I used locktite on the screws. I'll have to ckeck my out.
I hope you didn't get to many scratches on your cap. Good luck.

Yup ,as stated its a common problem with the R*.
I check the bolts on my cap 1-2x yrl and chk cap on every R* i have worked on for other people too.
Havent found any fuel cap screws that were ready to fall out or real loose but have found in every to need a 3/4-1 full turn to snug em up so in that case would eventually come completely loose.
Guess i chould remove the bolts, use some medium blue loctite (or lockwashers if not there to begin with) & reinstall.
I use blue loctite and not the super duty holding red loctite in that app because the small soft steel heads on the philips head screws could easily strip if ya used the HD red lcotite thats a SOB to break loose.
I dont know if loctite is resistant to fuel and or the fumes from fuel, anyone know if thats an issues or not?

Great!! now I will think about my gas cap all day until I get home and pull it off an check it!

Or just before ya start out to go home take 5 mins to pull the phlips head screwdriver out of the R* stock toolkit , remove fuel cap , then check tightness of the little pilips head screws on the underside of fuel cap.
