Thanks to Buck, here is his suggestion:

Back at the plus side of the battery connect a 10 amp watertight fuse holder. Attach as close to the battery as practical - I kept the holder within 6" of the plus terminal of the battery. Insulate this short connection with some 1/4" wire loom from Radio Shack.

Run the wire under the tank (using 12 gauge wire) also inside 1/4" plastic wire loom. You need this protection from vibration, which can eat through the wire insulation.

I used one of the bolts that mounts the ignition switch assembly for a ground connection..

Again, keep all wiring in that protective loom. Your outlet will be hot all the time, allowing a maintenance charger to be easily plugged in while not riding.

If you need "Switched" power you will have to install an inexpensive relay which can be purchased from an auto store.

If possible, use a watertight (marine) outlet, or don't ride in the rain!
