Engine Dieing, and bogging down? 4 Years, 7 Months ago
Just went on a 200 mile trip last weekend on my bike. Its an 07 *Silverado. Part of the trip the speed limit was 70 and we ran 80 for about 20 minutes. After that we stopped to eat. After we came back out the bike did something it never had, a couple of times backing out it died. After a couple minutes it didnt do it anymore so I put it out of my head. Well a little further down the road we stopped for a break. When we left there as I shifted to 3rd I let off the throttle while shifting then I opened it back up. It bogged down and acted like it didnt want to take gas. A buddy behind me said he smelled raw fuel real strong. This bike has no mods, factory exhaust, its completely stock with only 2650 miles on it. I changed oil at 1000 as recommended in the manual and I also changed the transfer case oil as recommended both with Yamalube. The bike doesnt seem to be doing anything wrong now so I'm wondering if it was just bad gas. It sure still has that rattle in the top of the engine lol. Thats a whole other question though. Its a rattle at a certain rpm. seems to be in the top range of each gear and only for a second. Its done it since it was new so I learned to deal with it. Anyone have any ideas or am I just worrying for nothing?

Hey Liquid Edge, when you baked out did you notice fuel leakage arond the air breather? and try full synthetic oil for engine noise.

Could have been bad gas. Was the weather hot? Put a couple oz of Seafoam in each of the next 3 or 4 tanks and see if it clears up. The Seafoam will help with any water in the gas too. You can most likely quiet the motor down if you went to a 20/50 synthetic oil. Couple things to think about anywho.

Weather was decently hot but not by any means the hottest day I've rode this year. Didnt notice any fuel around the breather. I checked for that cause a buddy has a Roadstar that does that from time to time. His bike has aftermarket pipes and the carbs been jetted though so that could explain his probs there. Not sure what caused this. Musky I'm a firm believer in Seafoam. I used to be a manager at Advance Auto and sold it to everyone after using it a couple of times. I really would like to change the oil to something else. Does this void the warranty at all? Thanks for your time and for all your replies. Thats why I like this site so much. Everyones willing to lend a helping hand. Reminds me of when I'm riding down the road and not one but all the bikes you see throw that hand out to the side. Makes you feel a connection with other people that ride. Nick

What grade of gas are you using?

Oil won't void your warranty unless they can prove the oil caused the damage. I agree. Ain't no better people than bike people

You can use any good M/C oil you like, it will not void your warranty. Just get it past break in first (600 miles). I'm using Mobil 1 20/50 V-twin oil, as are alot of guys here. Some car oil is iffy as "energy conserving" will ruin clutchs, so avoid it at all cost. And if you read here at all, you are aware that 4 quarts does the job. 4.3 is too much. My 2 cents anywho. BB

At the time this happened Doc I was using 89. I have used all three in the bike at one time or another. I think at the next oil change or maybe sooner I'll try the 20/50 in the bike. The bike seems to run fine now Doc so maybe it was just a fluke? Hopefully its not something that will happen again.

Liquid edge, Nice bike, you made a great choice of color.
My '07 is very, very, cold blooded. Even the warm engine, after restarting seems happier if the inrichment knob (choke) is pulled out about 1/4 inch for the first 1/2 mile or so.
Mine also has done the fuel boil over a couple of times in really hot weather after a city traffic ride. Stopped that by turning the fuel off for a few seconds before killing the engine under those conditions.
Just some little quirks that make the bike mine, and I love it!

Liquid edge, What Dryriver said . Shut the gas off before you shut the
engine off and then turn it on just before you start it. When they get
hot,and I'm not talking about overheating, They tend to boil the gas in
the float bowl sitting. 87 octaine will work fine.
welcome to the clinic.
