Valve Train Noise 6 Months, 1 Week ago
I have a 2009 Roadstar with about 7500 miles. On my last time out, I rode about 30 minutes to my destination. When I re-started it after about an hour rest, there was immediately a ticking sound coming from the engine. The oil is full. I have never heard anything like this before on my bike. It continues and doesn't matter whether it's cold, hot. It is now always there. Last time I started it, it started hard. Have not ridden since mid-Oct as that is usually end of season in Chicago but here comes another nice weekend. Bike is stock except for COBRA pipes, Cobra processor and K&N filter. I have been getting backfire since I installed the pipes and have not had time to install the air injector bypass yet. Don't know if that could have effect. Thanks!

Backfire is because of the AIS you remove it the backfire will go away. The ticking is common to this engine no matter what year. These engine make a lot of noise because they are air cooled and have looser tolerances because it. If you switch to a good synthetic oil it helps quite them down some. I use Amsoil 20w/50 and only use 4 quarts.

Yes, all the time. I read where these engines have some clatter but this is totally distinctive and never had the issue before. It does sound like it's out of oil but the level is right at the top of the stick. A freind thougt a lifter could be sticking and try using a lighter oil to clean out any sludge.

If it is under warranty then I would take it back to the dealer for them to check it out.

A friend of mine had a bike that was making noise like that. I said to him, why is yer bike making all that ticking noise. He said it started right after he changed the oil. I said what oil did you use. He said, I used the vegetable oil just like you said to. I said no man ! I wished we could use vegetable oil because it is so much cheaper than regular oil.

I hope that's not a true story.

Are you telling me that I shouldn't be using cooking oil in my bike?

My vegetable oil says it may have traces of peanuts. Could that cause premature SVS?

backfire is due to intact AIS, remove it. For pipes only, you did not need the Cobra processor. The valve ticking is normal to some extent, some oils keep the noise down a little more than other oils. Mines been ticking off and on for 137k miles, and has never had a valve adjustment either, and probably never will. BTW, if that processor is giving you less than 40mpg on a cruise, then it's too rich, and if it can't be adjusted, then think about removing it and use the stock one.
