Upgrade of battery cables and starter cable 5 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I've seen some references to upgrading these cables in various threads.

Would anyone recommend this upgrade just out of general principle? Is there a noticable difference when doing so without any other adjustment(s) to the bike?

If so, I'd appreciate anyone giving me any recommendations as far as their experiences and brands.

Thanks, guys!

I have the maxair wires but copper wire is copper wire, imo. The thicker wire lets more power run thru them with less restriction basicaly just like a fluid runing in a hose the bigger the hose the more fluid you can get thru it in the same.amount of time. And the stock wires are pretty thin and if you throw some corrosion in there it makes it worse for the power transfer. Hope this helps

4 ga cable will give your starter more juice BUT like a lot of other things it alone is not going to make a big difference. Combine it with a Warrior or Thunderfire starter, a Warrior starter relay, and a 310 cca battery and yes you will see a lot if difference. My 05 starts before the first revolution is over.

Curt, will all of those changes just be a matter of replacing what is currently on my 2000 R*, or are there some other variables that I need to consider or other adjustments that would have to be made to my bike?

In other words, would it just be "plug and play" for a novice like me?

That depends can you measure, and solder the ends on to make battery cables? If so then it is just mostly plug and play. The Warrior relay is backwards compared to the OEM one you just have to put the wires from the battery swapped to the relay terminals is all.

I was a little too giddy with the "fix" on the running lights. I'm back on that issue. This one with the larger cables and better starter may have to wait.

In my opinion it's a nice upgrade and the pluses can be noticed on a stock engine, but is it necessary for a stock compression engine? No.

I bought the flame wires and a 310 cca battery and noticed it started faster in winter because the starter had more available amps.

Would I replace the starter relay and starter and use HO parts, probably not on a stock compression engine unless the stock ones go bad. My starter relay has a tendency to stick so I did decide to install the Warrior relay just because the old one was dieing. When my stock starter goes bad, I will replace it with an HO starter.

There's a path to follow. Do the wire upgrade and when money is available do the rest when needed. Would I throw away a perfectly good stock 270 cca battery, heck no. I'd wait until it dies then buy a 310cca.

Since I bought the '09 new old stock this past summer, I think the battery may have gotten weak from sitting on the bike.

I have to keep a battery tender on it. I think I need to just get a new battery, should have made the dealer put in a new battery at the start.

I think I will replace it this winter with a 310 CCA battery, the one that is on there just seems sluggish.

The wiring that came on the bike should stand up to a battery with more cold cranking amps shouldn't it?
