Mini Air compressor 6 Years, 4 Months ago
So, I've been thinking about how to handle a flat on the road... and I don't mean trying to stop the bike, I've done one tire repair on the road and was lucky enough to find the nail at a gas station before the tire went flat... I used slime and was VERY impressed with it's performance, so much so that I bought a small bottle to carry with me, but the problem is trying to inflate the tire out on the road, I've found 3 options,
1. carry a CO2 inflator PROS: small CONS: expensive must replace CO2 cartridge
.
2. carry a cylinder driven compressor (fits in spark plug hole uses compression to fill tire) PROS: cheap & small CONS: have to take tank off to use
.
3. carry a battery operated air compressor PROS: cheap reusable CONS: to big
.
So, after hunting and searching... I've finally found a modification that works for me... I took a small inexpensive battery operated air compressor (k-mart), cut the plastic casing off of it and added a plug that will plug into my battery tender plug... it's reusable, it's small: palm sized, it cost me 12 dollars... I'll post pictures if any one wants... I have heard of others doing this with a walmart brand that has a fan attached to the motor, they just cut off the fan with a dremmel... mine did not have a fan, and it already had an on off switch wired in line.

Dave, I've used green slime in my mower equiptment and your right it's great stuff, but does it create an off balance in your bike tires? Great idea on the air compressor. I have thought about the dreaded flat tire on the road and what would I use. Could you post the pics when you get a chance? Thanks, Paul

no problem... I'll post pictures as soon as it get a little warmer than 6 degrees out side... I rode my virago for a thousand miles with slime in the tire, even in very cold conditions (there was a slight out of round feeling) but it quickly warmed up and handled without a problem. I don't think I'd put it in preventatively, but I do carry it with me in case I need it ~Guido (dave)
