OIL LEVEL 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE DEALER SERVICE MY BIKE. DUE TO THE HETIC SCHEDULE I HAVE NOW I HAVE TO DO IT MYSELF. I'AM CONFUSSED AS TO PROPER OIL LEVELS. AFTER CHANGING THE OIL AND FILTER TODAY AND PUTTING IN THE 4.33 QUARTS YAMAHA SAYS IS REQUIRED ON MY 07 IT APPEARS TO BE TOO MUCH. IS THERE A SPECIFIC TIME TO WARM IT UP AND A SPECIFIC TIME TO LET IT SET BEFORE CHECKING OIL? THIS HAS CONFUSSED ME SINCE THE TIME I BOUGHT IT NEW. ALSO DO YOU CHANGE BOTH DRAIN PLUG GASKETS AND DO YOU CHANGE PRIMARY OIL AT EVERY OIL CHANGE? LIKE I HAVE SAID EARLIER I AM NEW TO ROADSTARS AND WAY OFF IN THE DARK ABOUT A LOT OF THINGS. DO LOVE IT THOUGH. SOON AS I GET ANY TIME I'AM GONNA REMOVE THE AIS. THANKS FOR ALL THE IN PUT ON THAT SUBJECT. WHILE ON THE SUBJECT OF OIL. YAMALUBE VS. SYNTHETIC?

Now you've done it! You've opened up the controversial "oil change" subject. Your gonna get more advise than you know what to do with. Hehehe!
I use Mobil 1 V-Twin and change it every spring. New filter, and exactly 4 quarts and I never check it. Just make sure you are draining both drain plugs and always put in 2 quarts and then start the bike to move the oil out of the reservoir tank and into the crankcase. Then add the last 2 quarts. Oh yea, and NEVER start the bike with the dipstick out!!!! It tends to coat your entire garage with anti-rust compound!!!!

Drain both oil pans, I don't replace the gasket on each plug each time. The bike only needs 4 qts. Depending on where your breather tube is running you may find some extra oil collecting on your floor from the extra .3 qts you put in. These bike will actually run on three quarts and still keep everything in check, but 4 qts is the magic number.

HEY THANKS. NOW I KNOW THE PROPER WAY TO CHECK OIL LEVELS. ONLY HAD THE THING SINCE FEB. 08 AND FINALLY KNOW HOW TO CHECK OIL!!!!!! WHEN RUNNING YAMALUBE 20-50 THEY SAY CHANGE EVERY 4K MILES. AMSOIL SAYS EVERY 5K IN HARLEY. HOW OFTEN WITH SYNTHETIC IN ROAD STARS? I KNOW I RUN MOBIL 1 IN THE WIFE'S TRAIL BLAZZER AND ONLY CHANGE EVERY 6K. SORRY TO OPEN A CAN OF WORMS.

If you use Dino oil go by the book. If your using a synthetic you can double the change interval, with a filter change at around 4,000 miles.

This is bad advice.... then start the bike to move the oil out of the reservoir tank and into the crankcase. There is a plug on top of the engine behind the rear cylinder that has a place for a 10mm allen hex key in the top of it.(This plug should have been removed before draining the engine crank case) Put all of your drain plugs in and remove that top plug and put 2 qts in that location and two qts in the oil reservoir tank. Starting it with out the two qts in the crank case could cause you problems you don't want down the road.

Where did you hear about taking out that plug before draining the lizard ? I never do that. Should I be doing that ? I just take out both drain plugs, drain the piss out of it, screw the plugs back in. Put 2 qts of my yamalube in, start it up and let it run for about 15 to 30 seconds and then put 2 more qts in and say it. Were done lets ride.

Getting to that 10mm plug is a bit of a bitch too, it's such a PITA that I just do the 2 qt fill through the oil check tube, start it and then do the 2 qt add after and call it done as well.

I did read somewhere that this was the oil fill hole but have never been able to make that work comfortably.

What type of "Problems down the road" are we talking about?

+1 on what Lucky said, drain it,add 2 qts, another 2 qts, and done. Nothin more than 4 qts. Most here use either Amsoil or Mobil 1, just be sure its Vtwin oil no matter what you use.
