Fire Damaged Bike 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hey guys I have been searching for the next RS project (I have been without one for almost 6 months now!) I am attending an auction this Friday and there is a 2005 that has fire damage. It wasn't wrecked (or at least does not appear to be in the pictures) and still has a clean Florida title. Do you guys think this is smart to mess with. Now understand I can do all the work myself, but of course it will need to be worth my while. I guess it will be hard to say without looking at it, but do you think the motor internals will be hurt. Obviously it will need new gaskets throughout. Actually as I am typing this I am going down the list of what it needs and I am kind of psyching myself out. Any thoughts?

Depends on how bad the fire was. If wiring was burned then that will be fun in itself. Was the fire from gas on the pipes for did the carb catch fire? I would have to see it first in person.

Yeah I know it is hard to give an opinion without looking at it. It looks like (from the pictures) that the fire was at the carb. It actually melted part of it. It will definitely need all new wiring and electronics. I think I might pass unless it is under $500.

When I go out to eat. I tell them to walk the cow past the fire and throw it on my plate. Any more than that and I won't want it.

I agree with Curt. It depends on how bad it burnt. But you never know until you tear it apart

If this bike is burgundy, it just left my shop. I was looking at it. The rear fender is good, front fender is good, both mags are good. It was a carb fire. Gas tank and seat are completely gone. Risers melted, Wiring is cooked, brake fluid boiled. It also has backrest sidearms. I was not able to assess the motor, and the frame seems sound. I hope this helps,

Lee

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive, well-preserved body; rather you should skid in sideways, cold pizza in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly trashed, totally worn out, screaming, Yeehaw.\\\\\\

You can almost be certain there will be more damage than first meets the eye, and therefore more costly than you ever first figured. Unless you're exceptionally handy, I'd pass.

I should have added, these almost always get dismantled to be sold for good remaining parts... there's almost always decent money in that, and makes more sense than trying to resurrect the dead.

That sounds like the bike. Weird how the risers melted huh? What exactly was it at your shop for?
