CARB PUKING ? THEN READ THIS . 2 Years, 11 Months ago
HI GUYS.ALL you with carb puke issues need to extend the fuel overflow hose to drain/dump fuel out below your bikes for if/when your carb pukes just like i have been trying to get you guys to do for months now here in RSC. But many of you seem to ignor that fact and just let the puked fuel go onto the the hot motor/hot exhaust just waiting to be lite up.

Read what happened to this R* owner, was not good at all esp with the wife there too which could have really been a bad deal if they didnt get it under control fast enough.

So chk it out.

2005 YAMAHA XV1700 User Comment / Complaint

2007-03-31 00:00:00 Ravenna, OH

I was riding my motorcycle out of aspen colorado when i stopped to get gas. i filled the tank on my motorcycle. i then went inside and took a 15 min break. i then got back on my bike, started it and told my wife to get on. as she was getting on the bike stalled. unknown to me the carburetor started overflowing, dumping fuel on the hot pipes and my right boot. i hit the starter to restart the bike and the bike backfired setting the vaporized fuel on fire. we were able to put the fire out. there was some damage to the bike and the bike had to be trailered back to ohio. thankfully no one was injured.

Now maybe after reading this carb puke incident you people here in RSC will take carb puke a little more seriously and at the very least like i have suggested to extend your carbs over flow hose from the rear of air cleaner to below the bike to get raw fuel off the hot motor should the carbs puke to avoid setting you and yu bike on fire like happended to the person in the above statement.

And maybe some of you will also try what i have posted mult times here in RSC that worked for me stopping my bikes carb puking 4 of 5 times post hot shut downs which many say doesnt work. But it worked for my bikes carb just fine taking only 1.5 hrs & $20 to do,now there's no more carb puke on my bike even in 95 deg HHH temps.

For me actions/results speak louder then words & i got results with no more carb puke at all backing up what i have been posting and thats all i need to say on that one.

Fuel running out the carburetor is always a serious problem - agreed. However, I don't understand how rerouting the bowl vent will help. It's at the top of the carburetor and it seems like fuel would run out the various carburetor jets first since they are lower. The few times it happened to me the bike was hard to restart because of excess fuel in the intake. The bowl vent, at least on my bike, isn't connected to anything that would allow it to dump fuel into the carburetor. It's connected externally to an open tube on the back of the airbox so it would be unaffected by a backfire and, on my bike at least, there is no stain or any other indication that fuel has ever exited at that location.

The few times it happened to me I attributed the problem to the possibility of debris holding the needle and seat open since the bike was fairly new at the time. It hasn't happened since and I've ridden in temperatures a lot hotter than 95. Now that I'm pumpless the likelihood of it happening again is even less since there is no high pressure left in the fuel line when the bike is shut off.

I think that scottw has a good point here. While I have not had any such issues with my RoadStar, if a carb should overflow, it should be to the ground and not onto the motor or other hot parts. As to the position of the overflow, it isn't logical to have engineered it to be where the fuel will run out the throat of the carb before the overflow. I would think that the overflow would be in the float bowl above the float.

Yamaha should have extended the overflow with a hose to the underside of the bike as you have explained, very well in fact..they know about this puking thing and have not addressed the problem..your solution is much safer than having gas hit the hot motor..mine did it a few times before i rejetted and it scared the S#*& out of me..

Yamaha can't do this because of emissions regulations. You would end up with something like the charcoal canister that lives under the hood of your cage.

yup, thats what i figured with epa/emissions issues not allowing faw fuel to simly drain into the environment when the carb pukes.

But it still doent take away from the fact yamaha has totally dropped the ball on this issue and also SVS too that looks to be just as much as or more of an issue safety wise then carb puke is from what i saw in NTSB motor vehicle complaint sitewith yamaha not stepping up to the plate in most cases with SVS & simply telling customers to buy their Ring free solevnt /top end cleaner and trying that.

I just wanted people to see that the carb puke issue is a real safety issue where in certain cond like i posted when for example the motor backfired thru the carb on restart attempt while carb was puking fuel that ignited the fuel from the carb puke which is not good at all with up to 5 gals fuel sitting just above where the fire started not to mention the change of being burned too.

The heck wih the EPA on this one,for our safety we should all run the carbs overflow hose under our bikes to at least get any puked fuel below the hot motor. doing that should greatly reduce the chance of fire and liting up our R*'s or worse yet getting burned in the unlikely event the fuel did ignite which we can see is possible but isnt that likely to happen ,but why take the chance.

Man, thanks for the heads-up! I just got my R* about a month ago and did not realize these things were setup this way! My '77 KZ650 has 4 carbs and they all have their own overflow hoses routed to underneath the bike. I just assumed my R* carb'd bike did the same. Again, thanks for the info!!!

NP,just triying to help get the word out on installing the longer drain hose to keep everyone here in RSC safe.

BTW,i see you had a kawi,i still have the 1977 kawi kz1000 i bought new in 77 thats been on road all 33yrs i have owned it ans still ride to this day. Also have a 76 kawi kz900 and in the past in my younger crazier days was a huge fan /orner/rider og the bad ass for that period of bikes kawi tripple 2 strokes like the H1 500 & H2 750.

Those things were very fast in straight line but didnt handle well at all,the 900 & 1000 handled a little better then the tripples did but still not good vs today's bikes, thats for sure.
