Retired Rider,
Instead of screwing around with another carb, why not get them to convert it to fuel injection? There's a reason why they made this change in '08!

Re:CARB PUKING ? THEN READ THIS . 2 Years, 6 Months ago
My 1600 puked all the time until I stopped using gas with ethanol.

quote from Retired Rider:
I just got off the phone with the service manager at my dealership. About a year ago I bought a leftover 05 Road* midnight and have had the carb puking from day 1. It's under the factory warranty until 11/10/10 and Yamaha wants to try a fix with my ride that has never been done, so they say. The service manager told me that Yamaha acknowledged the problem. They want to put on a new fuel pump and the carb used on the 1600's since they have no knowledge of a puking problem with the 1600's using this carb. I told them to go ahead as I'm ready to try anything on their dime. Has anyone here tried this or is Yamaha just trying to get me off their back? I don't wrench but can be very persistent when I'm upset. I told them to ask Yamaha about insulating the lines thru the jugs but they wanted to try this as a first step. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Even though I don't post much this forum is a daily read for me. Greenpus I have seen many people on here with 1600's that have had the puking problem as you have. In Cape Coral,FL I have not found anywhere that sells ethanol free gas. I'm going to let them fail to make a point. Billd, I would love for them to convert it to fuel injection but they are only going to do the minimum as long as they can get away with it. At least I have got the service manager talking to Yamaha and doing something at their expense. I'll see where this goes to an ultimate solution.

Hay ck out the posing i put up two weeks ago (page 6 on this site) Yahama has replace my carb fuel pump gas cap plugs filters ect. and it puked the same day I got it back. I was still at the dealership w? the services guy standing nexted to me and as he described to Yahama it dumped about a cup of fuel from the carb. Remember this was after they had done all this work to by 2007 1700 RS

10% Ethenol fuel boils at lower temp then non ethenol'd fuel and it will be even worse when they introdue 15% ethenol fuels in the neart future.

Again,is'a all anbout reducing ther heat the fuel system collectively see's/absopbrs like meyal fuel line inbetween cyls/flaot bowl/maoin carb body /metal body of fuel pump/ etc.

From the factory Yamaha installs 1 very thin piece of INFERIOR (Not up to the task)insualtion material on the metal fuel iine inbetween cyls & on backside of fuel pump faceing cyls and non on the flaot bowl or body of carb (where it can be safely applied) and thats why the cabrs/fuel systems overheat boiling fuel of carb in many cases without the fuel pump on too because f-pump sint the route case but aggrivates the situation when carb is already puking fuel or if itys just about to puke fuel post filling up with fuel and turn on the ign .

But properly dbl if not tripple insulate the main componatnts of ther fuel system (Fuel oline inbetween cyls/flaot bowl/carb body/fuel pump)with the hi teck 2k deg f insulating tape mayterial i used and thast gets the job done.

Use only 1 layer of different or inferiro insulating material on only yher fuel ine inbetween the cyls and or leave out other fuel system items i suggest to insulate and all bets are off . When doing that you will get so so incosistant reults at best which has already been shown to be the case here when the yamah srv'c tech improperly insulated part of the fuel system with 1 layer of who knows what insulating material and the carb still puked fuel,no surprise to me at all.

Every carb/bike thats been insulated like i suggest with materials i suggest has stopped puking fuel every time including mine that puked in 55-60 deg temps and now doesnt puke at all at 95-100deg f.

And thats including 4-5 other fellow RSC memebers that asked for my info on how to do the carb puke fix and also a friend of mine locally that had carb puke issues with his 05 silverado too so i am up to approx 7 bikes that had carb puke issues that properly-fully did my proceedure follwoing my suggestions that now have no more carb puke with 100% success.

All the non belivers or people that only did a half assed job using inferior insulating materal and didn't insulate all the items i suggest can say all they want about it not working after they didn't do it corerectly because they felt they didnt need to do certain things etc .

But results is what gets it done IMHO and my suggestion of what's a good insulating material to use,how many layers of insulating material to use in what places along with here to apply it " collectively gets the job done " fixing carb puke for good.

Has anyone tried to plumb a fuel check valve inline for a fuel return line? Jegs makes a check valve that opens @ 5 PSI. If it was T'd in after the pump and back to the tank it would open to allow for a fuel return when fuel pressure was excessive. Instead of puking. Just a thought, mine don't puke but something like this might help for those that do.

When I was in Sturgis I had this puking problem but only when the bike sat in direct sunlight for a long period. I didn't know what it was at the time so I went to the dealer there. One of the wrenches there rides a R* and he said to fix just turn petcock off before you shut the bike down, start bike then turn fuel back on. I tried this and didn't have it happen again.

Scott - pls send me the instructions when you get a chance - I was @ the dealer this week - temp in the 90's - when I tried to re-start, fuel was leaking - dealer noticed it & was very concerned...said he had heard of this problem...he kept the bike for 2 days, but "could not duplicate"...I need to do something...thanks!
