Location of fuel gauge sensor? 5 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
I siphoned the gas out of my 09 fuel injected Road Star. It was running very poorly and new gas seems to have solved the problem (that's a relief). However, my gas gauge no longer works. The 09 has the fuel pump assembly located in the tank. Does anyone know if the fuel gauge sensor is part of that assembly? I'm wondering if it's possible I damaged something by sticking the siphon hose around in the tank.
It's always something (heavy sigh).
Thanks all.

BigRed, in the carburated ones our sensor is in the tank. Hopefully someone with an FI will chime in...

Hey, Dave.
It's on the RH underside of the tank.
A good test is to ride it for 5-10 mins. If the sensor kicks in, you should be back in business. Mine(and I know many others) work that way. Have to give them a few minutes of driving time to come back up for some reason.
Sometimes just a full tank is enough to slosh it back into working order if the float got pressed into a position that it can't easily recover from.

Thanks guys.
I got it running late today and didn't have time to ride it far. It's supposed to snow tomorrow. I'll take your advice Rich and give it a full tank and a good ride when I get a chance. Hopefully I didn't jam anything up by sticking that siphon hose around in there. I wanted to make sure I removed as much of the gas as possible and the dealer (who I trust less and less) said I wouldn't damage anything.
Thanks again.

If you are looking down at your tank as it sits on the bike, the float assembly is on your left just above the fuel on/off switch. If you had the hose in the tank fill hole it should not have disturbed it. It does take a bit for the sensors to register full as it reads in averages.

Couldn't you just put a line to a jug from the tank and turn on the switch on let it pump out its self. You could have damaged it with the hose very easily, did you try to get the hose to the other side of the tank (left side) to siphon it out too?

On the FI models, the lines disconnect at the tank. And, the only way to make the pump run is to start the bike, so a siphon is really the only option, since there's no petcock or anything.
I've stuck a hose in mine many times to get gas for the lawn mowers and it didn't hurn anything. You just can't jam it in there too hard.
