Yamaha never produced a ECU to take the FI Roadies to stage IV, so my question is? Will the roadie's stock ECU handle the high flow injectors? The larger throttle body and manifold will definately provide adequate air. but the question that puzzles me... the limits of the stock ECU. As far as I know, I am probably the only FI guy taking the roadie to Stage III on this forum or RSR.

Thanks for your opinions and advice.

One other thing I forgot to mention. The Road Star uses the return type fuel system. It also has a vacuum controlled variable pressure fuel regulator. The higher the vacuum the lower the pressure to the injectors and of course the less they flow for a given duration. During low vacuum acceleration the pressure goes up and the injectors will flow more with the same duration. Not all Yamahas have this setup. If there are aftermarket adjustable pressure regulators out there one might help if the higher flow injectors end up making things too rich. An adjustable vacuum controlled regular would be even better. Just some thoughts.

The weather is finally clearing, I am going to put the original air cleaner back on to day and taking readings as I ride tomorrow to see what changes, if any, take place.

My guess is that the ECU will keep your readings the same. But let us know.

It depends on the throttle setting. Over about 15% throttle the ECU changes to a throttle position mode and fuels according to throttle position and engine speed (temperature also) and ignores the O2 sensors. So in closed loop they may stay the same and in open loop may change if the air flow has been changed.

I was going to start a new thread but since most of the folks interested in this are part of this discussion decided to just add to this one..

I have a completely stock 2009 R* and about to add Speedstar Longs, BAK, and disco the AIS. Before I do anything I am adding the Innovate AFR gauge to my stock bike first. After getting it on and getting some readings with a completely stock bike I'm going to then in stages do my mods and report the AFR readings.. Eventual goal is to compare the stock setup to the fully modded bike and see the changes in AFR after each mod. Does the stock EFI have some ability to compensate for the changes.. Can it fully compensate and keep the bike from running too lean... I'm gonna find out... I suspect it's going to significantly compensate but then again Cobra does sell allot of those PC's

I just picked up my pipes from a welding shop near me.. both now have the innovate 1" bungs on the front cylinder/lower pipe. I pretty much have the AFR gauge mounted on my bars and just need to finish up some wiring.. Should have everything on by end of weekend and hopefully get a ride in... I'm going to ride throughout the week, note the readings at various speeds and temperatures (I'm in Florida) and then the following weekend start with my mods in stages.. 1. pipes; 2. BAK; 3. AIS disco...

Will keep you posted... If anyone has thoughts/suggestions on the above please share..

Thanks,
Rob

Hey that's great Rob. I am curious to see the change in a/f readings, if any.

The gauge should read real lean while the AIS is working. I'm curious about when it shuts off and that should show up on the gauge while you're riding. Right now I know for sure it's working at idle.

I know I'm going to get kicked for this, but can I make an observation? 4200 posts later and I'm still scratching my head on this one...

Guys have been running very well for years now on modified FI Road Stars(without fuel processors), with not a single horror story that I've heard of (I was probably one of the first FI bikes here at the Clinic in 2008).

So, with that said, why is there such an interest in spending so much effort to diagnose so-called "lean" conditions, where there is most likely none? It's kinda like wearing a blood-pressure monitor 100% of the time, when you're most likely healthy. It's 125/82 when I walk to the mailbox and back. It's 121/81 when I walk to the bathroom to take a dump. So what...

Wouldn't you guys rather buy chrome?

Again, just an observation. I'm not pointing at anybody in-particular. It just seems to be a lot of concern about most likely nothing...

Sorry for the analogy. Friday night is a drinking night...

Let me check...

But, I don't have to have my bung welded on to know I'll be just a little bit leaner...
