update:

Last week I took my bike to a friend of mine who is also a mechanic. We tried to mount a pair of shorter dogbones and... surprise! the previous mechanic mounted the relay arm back to front! now everything is in the right place, and i can enjoy my new progressive suspension

Is Yamaha aware of this problem? I wonder if there is a way we can contact them and find out why this is a weak point.

Yep, its a know... but its not a catastrophic failure. Henceforth not "recall"... No help from Yamaha.

There have been a couple of people that have gotten their insurance company to write off the bike as a loss, since "it requires" a new framer to fix it.

And no, it just needs to be pushed back into the right place (after the bending) and reinforcement welded to the tangs.

Mine cracked again...
This time we'll straighten the bracket up to its original shape then reinforce it with gussets. I think we'll add a pair of brackets to link the shock mount to the transfer case bracket that's just behind the shock mount. it should be a sturdy point and should prevent the shock mount to bend towards the rear wheel again

Has Yamaha fixed the problem? I know, when there is a known problem, they will re-engineer the problem area, and incorp. it into the next model year?

Has anyone ever explored the possibility that the "flip and grind" can lead to this problem? By putting stress on the frame in a way that it was not meant to be stressed from the factory? It was this quote that got me: the previous mechanic mounted the relay arm back to front! Or am I way off base?

Anytime we mod our bikes there can be unintended consequences, so I would say no your not off base. But its hard to imagine for me. This problem was more prominent in the 99 models than any other. And Yamaha did address it in the 2000 models. Not saying they eliminated it, but all the ones I have heard about were 99's.

Thanks for posting that Gram, I was not aware of most being 99's. It took quite a load off my mind wondering if and when it happens should I address now or wait so on and so on.
