On second thought, if everything came on as normal *before* you charged the battery, and only dimmed when you hit the starter button. Then only *after* you put the bike on the charger for a week and a half, *none* of the dash lights and gauges worked, but the head and taillights did, it may not be the battery at all. You may have another [bigger] issue altogether. Could you clarify?

Hey Tug......
your bike is a 2005 1700 I would say going by the seat of me pants {LoL} the stock battery has out lived it's life span, think'in it has a dead cell, but to be sure... have it checked out, if necessary install a good high cranking battery.

We'll put my battery in it first, and try to start it before we get to crazy chasin' gremlins. Sneaky little bastards are hard to catch sometimes.

This doesn't need to be hard. If a battery is supposed to be "fully charged" then, when it's hooked up and you hit the starter, if battery voltage drops below 10 volts while you are attempting to start... she's all done.

Ok here's the update. The battery is still good. What happened is...when I ran my wires internally on my new bars
I crossed two of the wires on the black plug in the headlight{for the ignition) and every time I hit the starter button the fuse would blow. I put the wires where they belong and now it works like it's supposed to

Thank you. It's reassuring to know that I am not the only person who does these things.
Last week I cleaned the microwave and now it only works when you press "reheat".
