Spark Plugs 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
How tight should my spark plugs be? I took the old ones out and they were barely hand tight.

That is correct, just snug.

Plugs should be tightened enough to crush the gasket, and no more. That's fairly snug.

Just remember you're screwing a steel plug case into an aluminum alloy head, and use your own discretion... lunching the plug threads of the head can become a fairly costly mistake.

Only crush the gasket.

But don't confuse snug when you get to the crush washer. It will start to feel a slight snugness, but the crush washers need to be crushed. And no way will they come out by hand.

Erb's got that right! You'll get considerable resistance once you get to the gasket, but keep going, so that it will crush... when you meet the next level of resistance: STOP, you are there!

At NO time should your plugs be barely hand tight.

Let's be more emphatic: Once you have crushed the gasket, and feel it want to truly resist... you MUST stop, as the next thing you will be tightening... is the ripping out of your plug threads from the head!

Use a torque wrench and they should be tightened to 13 ftlbs.
