You buy the kit for the size of the bolt that originally fit the hole. It'll come with the oversize drill and tap to fit the OD of the insert. If there's any question just make sure your bolt will screw into the insert before installing it. Also the time serts come in different lengths - obviously you don't want one that's too long and the one you use might be a tad shorter than the original threads which is ok since it's a heck of a lot stronger than the original threads anyway.

If you're not sure about squaring the drill or the tap with the hole they make a pilot you can use that holds the drill bit square.

These things are constantly being used at every shop around, even on Fords with that crazy sparkplug they put in one of their engines, been there.

Thanks, ts1. My pucker factor is down to an 8 (out of 10) now.

When you drill and tap the hole, pack the drill and tap with a thick grease. Drill speed should be low to keep from pulling the bit too deep. The grease will catch the catch the chips while drilling and tapping the new hole.

I'm glad you're feeling more comfortable. There's one thing that just occured to me though and that's the wall thickness of the area you're working on. If it's not thick enough, and I can't tell from the picture, to allow an insert or the 10mm oversize tap you mentioned then there may be another alternative which I've never tried.

Maybe something to check out.

Also hold a vacuum cleaner hose next to the bit when you drill.

Been there!Done It! Got the tee shirt!..Napa part #770-3093.It's a kit. Do you have a "T" handle for running taps?As Fireman said, variable speed drill on low, bearing grease the bit, run in about an eighth, clean the drill bit and repeat. You can also magnetise the bit. With the grease you don't need the vacuum. If you want, PM me and I'll walk you through.

UPDATE: Drilled out the 8mm bolt hole to a 10mm and used a 10mm Time-Sert kit. No more leak! Did an immediate oil and filter change afterwards. What a load off my mind. Thanks for all the advice and support!!!
