Speedometer needle broken 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hi,

I literally just picked up my '99 Road Star on Wednesday. I think I lucked out as it has 2,200kms.

Anyway, the only issue with it right now is that the speedometer needle is broken. I took off the meter assembly last night, and got the whole thing apart. My question is - the little part on the plastic needle itself had broken in half. I Krazy Glued it, but wanted opinions as to whether or not this was going to function properly if I do that, and if I should just go try to buy one at my local shop.

As a complete newbie - how does the needle actually spin? Just from looking at it, the metal pin in the face and the hole it fits into in the needle appear to be completely smooth - I just don't understand how it spins if there's nothing for it to grab onto.

Thanks!
Ian

I don't think we're talking about a lot of torque here. A simple snug fit is sufficient for it to move the needle.

It's just a press fit and friction is the only thing that hold it on. If you can't fix the needle you will have to buy the whole meter because they don't sell just the needle. You can find them on e-bay from wrecked bikes and guess you could just pull the needle off the one you buy or change the whole meter out. BTW from Texas.

Thanks all. As it turns out, my initial glue job has not held. So, I guess I'll try to re-do that, and see what happens. Too bad they don't sell just the needle!

Bet it wouldn't be too hard to make a needle for it. Maybe even a chrome one!..........

Hmmm, interesting idea. I'm in school for machining, might make for a good project, wonder if the weight of metal will cause issues tho?
But do have access to plastic too.

Steel might be too heavy but I bet aluminum would work out just fine..........and easier to work as well.........
