I am not going to try and start an oil war here, BUT you can use synthetic oil in you Roadie although it is a good idea to use an oil designed for V Twins. For example I use Mobile 1 Vtwin and it has always been good for me. This is a sythetic oil, it's just designed for a V Twin.

In no way am I saying this is the oil you have to use, I am just giving an example Others will chime in with opinions/suggestions.

=================

Syn oil is fine,just ensure you run motorcycle specific oil without friction mods in it that can in some cases lead to clutch slippage.

But thats the least of the issue,more importantly for the R*'s flat tappet cam'd motor its the zddp/zinc & Phos lvl you need to be carefull of being too low.

Motorcycle specific oils like amsoil's mcv or mobil's-1 v-twin (both syn) that have the proper zddp lvl required for the R* FT cam'd motor along with no fric mods making it wet clutch friendly too which most std pass car oil can't match.

I run mobil 1 v-twin syn bike oil with no clutch issues .

But dont run pass car oil as its not the best for the R* because 99% of pass car oil has fric mods that aren't always wet clutch friendly and they also have low zddp lvl's not good for the FT cam in the R* motor.

I always find it at my local Walmart. Of course they are all different. We have three walmarts and only one carries is regularly. I have to special order it at the auto parts store though...

Autozone/Advanced auto etc is where you get mobil-1 v-twin.

Yami rec's 4k mile oil & filter changes with std dino/non syn oil,i run mobil-1 v-twin syn to 6k miles or so & some people run the amsoil syn MCV bike oil to 8k miles.

BTW,no matter what the manual says 4qts oil max when changing oil & filter on the R* or you will overfill the crankcase/oil tank.

A little valve ticking is not at all unusual. We probably all have some.

But, like the good folks here are saying, synthetics are good, but only go with a bike specific oil, and preferably one even more specifically formulated for v-twin motors, like ours, for the reasons already cited.
