Re:engine oil 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
EP,

If your using Mobil 1 and not putting a lot of miles on in a season... just change it once a year. Even oil ages and oxides.

Also, EP... your probably changing those others too soon. No reason, even with today's good dinos, not to go 5,000 miles.

And, in the latest Car & Driver, a test of a BMW 535, changing only when their on-board said the oil was due... went 19k miles between changes, twice!

I have so many vehicles: a van, car and 2 bikes, that I don't put many miles on any of them in 1 year, so I just change 'em all once each year. Synthetic in everything.

My van says when to change the oil, but it doesn't analyze it, it only counts engine rpms. At 5k miles on the oil, it's saying it's 50% used... and the color is still good.

You can go double the miles with syn vs dino oil. I change mine every 6 to 8k miles. 141k and still going strong. And yes, the engine makes all sorts of noises. It's just singing it's tune

I changed to Mobile 1 V-Twin Synthetic last year from Valoline which I would change once a year (just cau). But now with the Mobile 1 V-Twin and I don't put the mileage in most of you do in a year, how long should I go before changing the oil ? Once a year or longer ? I'm old school and my vehicles get changed at 3k with filter, where I've never had engine issues. Once a year Mobile 1 V-Twin cost will not break the bank but why throw the $$$ away if I don't need to any sooner. What you think ?

I replace my oil/filter every 5000 or 6 months which ever comes first. Which means I essentially change it twice a year.

Thanks for the feedback .......previously using the Valvoline MC 20w-50 on my R* and Venture Royale, I would change it every 6 months just cause. Since I switched to Mobile 1 V-Twin last year I figured once a year would do it,so I'm due here soon. Have to admit my vehicles at times go to 4k between changes due to work schedules, time available, etc.. But I'm a creature of habit and figure oil change is a cheap form of maintenance for engines.

================================

I go 6k miles or 1x each riding season (whichever comes 1st) on mobil1-v-twin and my bike is in off season storrage from mid-late Nov to May so it's only ridden approx 7months yrly.

Some guys push Amsoil's MCV syn bike oil to 8k miles.

Remember,Yami rec's 4k mile oil & filter change with std/non syn oil so with full syn oil you can go cinsiderably longer inbetween oil & filter changes.

Actually Yamaha recommends an oil change at 4000 miles but only recommends a filter change every other oil change. It's entirely possible that I'm the only one here that does that.
