Lithium Soap? 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
A lot of the lubrication points shown in the service manual call for the application of lithium soap type lubricant.

Specifically, I am about to repack my steering neck bearings. What do the members of the RSC use for this.

I was considering repacking with Lubriplate No. 105, but after a bit of research on Google I'm not convinced this is a lithium soap lubricant. Although my Dad and I have always called it 'lithium grease'.

Your thoughts?

Thanks. AT

I've never heard of lithium soap. But the clymers manual calls for lithium grease. I think if you use what you normally use you will be fine

I think lithium soap and grease are the same thing. At least the almighty Wikipedia says so.

Lubriplate No. 105 is lithium grease and we used to use it on jet engines so it is what you want to use. It is subject to a lot of elements and extreme heat so your good with it.

After looking at it a second time...thanks to your link... I agree with you that the grease and soap are the same thing.

Thanks tykesplace.

I know that Lubriplate No. 105 is a great engine assembly lube, but it just seemed a bit thin for the neck bearings.

I am a bit concerned about it bleeding out in the hot summer months.

And I'm still not sure if Lubriplate is lithium based. Lithium isn't mentioned on their web site or either of the tubes that I have.

Excellent question.

I guess that's part of what I was hoping to get answered....are there any good alternatives?

EP2? Wheel bearing grease? Olive oil? Crisco?

jp-1 is a good grease, they make hi-temp or multi-purpose grease,It is very water proof and holds up well under extreme conditions.I have put it to the test, take any grease you like and stick a blob on a piece of steel, put a blob of jp-1 next to it and set them under water at a 90 degree angle for 24 hours and then decide for yourself. I have seen a lot of name brand grease's fail this test, where I work there is a lot of scale from steel or as some say, slag, and this grease holds up well, other then anti-seize or spindle lube. I hate to admit it,you can buy it at autozone.
