Hard Starting 4 Years, 7 Months ago
When I ride my 99 1600 Roadstar on a hot day and I shut the engine down for maybe 10 minutes it becomes very hard to start. When I crank it over fuel starts pouring out of the carb overflow. When engine finally starts it runs like crap for the first 10 seconds. It then clears up and runs fine, until the next time I shut it down.

So my friends 99 Roadstar also does the same exact thing. We both the other day were riding and we stopped for a coke. We went to start them and they both seem to flood out. Mine started sooner than his. I noticed, watching him crank his that the fuel pump was running like crazy and fuel just pouring out of the carb overflow, just like mine.

Does anyone know what the problem is or the fix? Other than not riding on a hot day?

Do a search on carb puking.

If gas is coming out while you're turing it over the I suspect your float needle valve is not working properly. Probably some trash in there or the seat needs to be replaced.

Hi Bostd....

My '06 does the same thing. I'm not exactly sure how to explain it, but it's something to do with the gas in the carb after shutoff coming to a boil due to the extreme heat of the engine (especially on hot days).

I shut off the petcock and let it run for about half a minute before turning it off on hot days. That's been working for me.

Regards....greeny

Mine did this 2 times back in Feb. I contribute it to the winter gas formula change from winter to summer and vice versa. It was an hot day at 85 degrees both times on the same tank of gas. Hasn't did it since. But these guys will give you a more technical scoop on the subject.
