I know I am getting in late in the game but I didn't see if you cleaned the block of all cam and lifter debris. Was that done in another thread?

Yeh, then we could quit worrying about how much zddp we have to have in our oil!!!

I dont worry about the zddp lvl,i simply use motorcycle specific oil that already has the proper zddp with no fric mods and forget about it.

Ricks, that adjustment screw, one per rocker arm set, can't be used to take up any difference in pushrod length. If there's almost no difference anyway then it'll be taken up in the lifter preload which is okay.
lookin good. Let us know how it runs out.

The short answer to that is No, I have just drained the old oil and discarded the old oil filter. Im hoping that any damage if any to the engine thru oil contamination is minimal. The camshafts have wear marks only and are nowhere near as bad as those lifters, so there should not be any broken bits etc floating around in the sump. The lifter material is much softer than the camshafts and im hoping that most of it was caught in the oil filter, so ill just be doing quite a few oil and filter changes when i get it up and running.

I certainly hope you are right. While I am not totally familiar with the dry sump on these bikes I have seen quite a few wiped cams in car engines. Normally a total tear down is warranted as I've found the cam and lifter debris in rod/ main bearings and even embedded in piston skirts.

Yes i know what your saying, im just hoping that things are not that bad here and any left over contaminants will be shortly discarded with the new oil and filter after the break in process Ill then go for a short ride and dump that oil aswell and probably repeat that a couple of times.
When i drained the old oil into a pan i took it out into the sunlight and expected to see metallic specs shining around in the sun but the oil looked ok, so again at night i went out with a torch and had another look whilst shinning the torch around in there but it seemed to look ok again so im hopeful that most of it was caught by the filter

You got me curious so I looked up the oil system in the maintenance manual. Again, I don't have much hands on knowledge with dry sump systems. If you drained the oil from the crankcase and didn't find any debris that is encouraging. According to the maintenance manual the oil pump is a double rotor system. One set of rotors pump oil from the bottom of the crankcase into the oil tank and the other rotor system pumps oil from the tank to the oil filter. The bad part is that the oil pump gets unfiltered oil going both ways. The good part is that there is a couple of strainers at each oil line coupling at the oil tank. You might want to check them to see if they have the remnants of the cam and lifters. Hopefully all debris is right there.

More than likely anything in the crankcase was picked up by the screen on the oil pump intake. If you should ever have to split the cases it'll probably still be there. If it got up to the tank then it's probably laying in the bottom of the tank and if not there's another screen to catch it before the oil heads back to the pump and then to the filter.
You can buy a magnetic drain plug for the crankcase at one of the auto parts stores. The bolt head isn't the same size but they make them with the same threads.

I didn't mean to confuse you but there are no screens in the oil lines. The first screen is in the oil pump intake in the crankcase and the second screen is under the oil tank cover.
