Doc, a few months back dragoon offered to make some of us backup clutch cables to keep in our bags for "just in case". He charged (then) $25. I got one from him and it looks like it will do the job. Some even switched over to his for everday use.
The link for the thread is below.
Clutch cable broke 35 miles from no where

I purchased Motion Pro spray lube but was told not to use it on my SS cables as it would discolor the casing. I used Barnetts lube on the cable ends.

Alright... beverages consumed... BP back to normal. […normal for me at least.]
The cable I replaced 4 months ago was a stainless put on by the PO, no idea what brand. I replaced it with another stainless, Motion Pro I believe. It snapped right at the lever and I havent looked closely to see exactly where.
I know the cable has nothing to do with the R* per se, it's just another straw in the bundle, and my back is talking to me.
I'm not bashing the R*, so no need to defend it, I just seem to have had more than my share of issues with this particular one. I still love the R* and wouldn't hesitate to buy another; I'd just make damn sure the VIN was a lot higher next time. I know it happens with any new production line, kinks need to be worked out etc., but I've had enough totally unexpected things happen, that I'm beginning to question taking mine far from home.
I suppose I've been fortunate up to now, but over the past 30 years. I've had some old bikes, both Japanese and American that have been ridden hard and put away wet, and I think the worse problem I had was a clogged fuel filter.
That said, I think I'm going to take Erbman's advice [again] and get me a couple stock cables for the price of a stainless and keep a spare in my bags. …That and have the bike blessed while I'm at it.
Oh, and thanks to those of you who didn't bash... as for the rest of you, you all can kiss my lily white arse!
Use a Barnett SS cable. Tim Bondurant sells them. I'm impressed at the quality of the cables. Just frickin' first class and ever feature a stock cable has. Plus, I think they have a lifetime warranty on them.

It's true... lubricate an SS cable and the casing discolors.
Go ahead, ask me how I know...

I thought it was a blessing when I got my Roadie last May, now I'm beginning to wonder if it was really a curse.
I just got my bike running not more than 24 hours ago, after being down 2 weeks, and my 4 month old clutch cable snaps!!! REALLY??? I bought this bike to ride cross country. How I'm I supposed to do that when I cant even ride cross town? I have had more problems with this damn bike than *any* I've ever owned. I'm seriously getting tired of this S***!!!!
And for the record, pushing 800+ lbs. of metal around in leather isn't much fun either. I'd already gone to the gym today, I didn't need another workout. Thank GOD I was only a mile from home.. Did you lube that new cable before you put it on? I do mine about every 6 months
No prob. I have 50 more being made. Just PM me.
Cheers
PS. There are two types of lever end holes. If you use the wrong shape to the lever it won't last long

Same thing happened to me last year...put a Motion Pro SS clutch cable on my '00 & it lasted just about 4 months. Broke at the lever end 40 mi. from nowhere. Rode the back roads & made it to the shop. Replaced it with a Barnett SS cable. No problems since !
