Neutral Switch 1 Year, 2 Months ago
After getting the bike back together, I let it idle for a while and drove it up and down the drive a few times.. let it sit in the garage for a few minutes and noticed a puddle of oil under it... after further investigation, the Neutral switch is leaking cause it is rotted... anyone replaced one if these? From my findings, I have to remove the right side jack shaft casing and oil tank to do this job! WTF?!? is all I have to say... all that for a freaking switch? No well planned by Yamaha! Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Re:Neutral Switch 1 Year, 2 Months ago
yes, and what a pain!!!! about 5hrs. rear tire has to be pushed forward to remove the front pulley, watch that spacer behind the pulley, has to go on the same way. remove block behind pulley, remove pipes, remove the oil pipe that fits to top of tank, ya know, the one you pour oil in.

now here's a short cut you might want to try, I have small hands so it worked for me. Instead of taking apart the entire transfer case and needing a new gasket, there are 2 options:

1. Take chrome transfer case cover off. remove the 36mm nut from the transmission shaft, slip the chain off, and remove the entire transfer case as a whole unit. (transfer case and oil tank are one unit)

since I was a bit concerned about getting the chain back around the gear and getting it back on

option 2
I removed the nut and lock washer, put the nut back on so it just caught the thread, this allowed about an inch of room to pull the transfer case away from the engine, and the chain stays in place. I wedged a socket to keep the gap open. the lower neutral sw. screw was 3 to 4 turns unscrewed, so because of small hands was able to get my fingers in there to turn it completely out. I did have to make shift a tool to be able to tighten the screw back again. I have one of those small 90 deg ratcheting screw drivers, used a piece of plastic (shopping bag) to wedge the proper bit into it since the tool only comes with 2 philip and 2 flathead bits. but it worked.

any way, hope this helps.

Take what ya can, toss the rest

I would also suggest to get a new o-ring for the front pulley, the seal though should be ok.

HAHA... Thats what my wife said too... hey, what ya gonna do? I may have to paint the engine again, but, atleast my bike wont be marking her territory where ever she goes and what ya expect from a bike with over 130k on her? right? to be expected i guess... yeah I was a bit miffed when I first saw it... but, I had me a cold one and started the research on what to do to fix her...

The fact that you have the knowledge and ability to fix her is so far ahead of many. Consider that a blessing in itself versus a month in the shop, $500 invoice, and then still wondering if it was done right. This site rocks.

(Personally, didn't know I had a switch that can leak oil - ha ha)
