Somebody just shoot me! 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Ill take anyone's advice at this point. Hell, I'd almost light my bike on fire if that's the advice someone gave me.

I am attempting to get my carb set up correctly since the PO failed to do it correctly to begin with.

My issue is the bike hesitates in the low RPM range under a load. Example: starting out the motor lugs. This is the same for every gear I shift to. As soon as I start to get into the throttle it lags...then once it "catches up" it runs great. Better than before.

I have turned the PMS 2 turns, 2.25, 2.5 Doesnt change a thing.

I have an 03 1600, Longshots, BAK, dyna 3000. Heres my current set up.

170 main
2 turns on PMS (2.25, 2.5 makes no difference)
Needle set to 4th groove. All the washers and spacer are in the proper place.

I am either missing something or I havn't had enough beer. Either way I am getting fed up, and not to mention sick of trying to get to that PMS screw after every test Id also like to mention I am not angry with my R* in general, but more my lack of knowledge of carbs.

BTW the reason I did this was because my bike was running rich. 32-35 mpg's.

If you are not far from Curt then my suggestion would be to take it to him and ask for help

Pick this up from Baron Custom Accessories. Sure makes adjusting the PMS easier.

Make sure you have MIKUNI Jets and Needle. Throw out Dynojet stuff... period. Get a Jetting kits with the adjustable (multiple slip slot) from Shane at SS Custom Cycle or from Tim Bondurant (aka Metric Magic.)

Once you have one of them... then ask Neil for a good baseline to start from.

I hated my CV40, when I had it. I had about 50 different setups in it... from Rich to Lean to running almost good to running horrible. I got from 30MPG to 55MPG depending on everything.

I gave up and went to an HSR42 setup for a BAK and good full perf pipes from Shane (and added a Yost tube) and had Ken "the Mucker" Sexton do the TPS mod. I am running the Stock 2001 Ignition Controller (though I have a DYNA3000 waiting to be put in) I'm happy with it completely and have only had to adjust the idle and the PMS slightly (plus I tweaked the accel pump for personal preference).

Hey, you wanted an HSR 42 anyway. Sounds like it's time!

Not trying to hijack the thread my 02 1600 gets 39 to 44 mpg is that normal. Hope u fix it when i first bought mine the damn thing cut out to damn early i put a 1700 ignition box on it and its a lot better now. Still cuts out a little to early for me. Too used to riding a in line 4 cylinder bikes i guess.

Ditto on the Curt thing, but if that's not possible. I'd check for any vacuum or air leaks, it's pretty common for the intake manifold to start cracking. When you say spacers and washers are correct, is it [from blunt end] washer, clip, spacer, washer? Also, how about the small spring just on top of the needle? I found mine didn't seat properly and that caused me problems. Did you make sure all the jets on the carb were good and clean when you worked on it? What about simple things like the plugs? How long has i been since you checked them? If you've been running rich, it's possible you may have fouled the plugs. Or how about the Dyna, is it dialed in properly?

+100 on Moreland's suggestion. I even went so far as to put an 8 inch piece of fuel hose on the end of the Barons PMS, so I can reach down next to the idle knob and dial it in, while riding. Just be sure to zip tie the loose end so it doesn't go flopping around and back the PMS out an go flying.

Taking it to Curt was the first thing that came to mind. It's about 3 hours so not to bad.

Moreland...seriously the more I think about it the more I want to go ahead and just dish out the money and buy the 42. I think it'd be a good investment, especially if I can get it shipped to me pretty much ready to roll.

Doc, Ill check for any leaks. The manifold is about 6 months old because it was cracking. The plugs were just checked 3 weeks ago. And I am 100% sure on the order of the washers/spacer but I will check once more just to eliminate that issue. The fuel hose idea would do me a WORLD of help! Not having to take it home and dissasemble it to get to the screw would be great.

I think Ill just order the PMS screw thing and take out my jets and clean them up a bit. Ill let yall know how it goes in a few days.

Nope. The Barons jet kit comes with 3 or 4 main jets, needle w/clips, allen head float bowls screws and a drill bit to remove your PMS plug.
