Re:HELP PLEASE!!! 1 Year, 2 Months ago
I am going to assume that it had something in it. It did have some varnishing in the Ventura and bowl. Didn't actually see anything but didn't get magnifying glass out. I am going to say dirty. I was nervous about taking it apart but that was the simplest Carb I have ever worked on. Thanks to all for the help.

Run something like Seafoam in your fuel regularly, and it'll help to reduce the opportunities for this to happen again. The ethanol in the gas, is a recipe for trouble if you don't. Especially, if the bike sits for awhile. I use either Seafoam, or Stabil in everything I own now, be it diesel or gas. It's just cheap insurance.
Takeshikes(?sp) started a thread where I got the vid I posted, titled "this was entertaining"(?). He perfected the new "remove carb, shake it, and replace it" method of dealing with sticky needles

Okay, have now ran 3 tanks of premium thru it and not at all impressed with the mileage I was getting. 40+ last year and can't get it over 30.5. Any suggestions on where to start? New Ngk plugs, fuel filter, runs great, k&n cleaned and oiled. This thing is going to drive me nuts!

From your first post, you have after market pipes, and a K&N filter. Is the filter in the stock air box?
Have you changed anything inside the carb, other then cleaning it good, and reassembling it? Are all the jets and needle still stock?
What Smokescreen mentioned early on in the thread may be the problem. You had something causing fuel to leak out of the carb, that was probably crud in the float that is fixed now, but you may have a vacuum leak.
Many members have struggled with crappy mileage, and tried to find the reason, and it has turned out to be a vacuum leak around the intake manifold flanges where it bolts to the heads. It can be tough to find it, and some have simply pulled the manifold in desperation, surfaced the faces of the flanges, reinstalled the manifold, and discovered that it worked. Their mileage comes back.
Another source can be the white cover on the Coasting Enricher.

You can run regular, the motors are designed to run on the cheap stuff.

Yes, filter is in stock box. Replaced the white cover as preventive when I put it back together. The only thing I changed was the needle. I got a dynojet jet kit with the bike and I put the adjustable needle in it on 3rd groove. I will check for vacuum leak.

Just curious regarding the needle, is there something that made you do that? Wild hares are expected sometimes
I'm almost exactly like your setup, with the exception, that I went to the barons kit, and used the 170 main, and the barons needle(4th), and slightly modified my airbox with an 1 3/8 inch additional hole.
The barons needle, was fatter then the adjustable needle that the PO had installed in the carb. Was the DJ needle similar to the stock needle except for the extra grooves? If the DJ needle is slimmer, it may be letting more fuel past, but that would only be an issue from around a quarter throttle on up to WOT. Using a DJ needle, in a stock 165 mikuni jet, may make trying to diagnose an issue on the www, more difficult.
If it was 40 before, and not now, I'd be looking for a vacuum leak, and or replacing the main jet with a comparable DJ jet to get you back on track. The comparable DJ main, should be a 176, according to the chart in the Tech Articles section.

You might also want to check where the enricher knob seats against the stop. Some people have had problems with it staying out just a bit, and have trimmed little thin donuts off the back of the knob one at a time, with a razor or exacto knife to make sure the enricher gets turned off completely.

I put that needle in because it is adjustable and the stock wasn't. It did seem a little thinner now that you mention it. I am going to go check for air leaks in a few.

You can use a DJ needle and Mikuni jets no problem the Mikuni jets give you more choices in sizes. The DJ needle is just slightly shorter by 1/2 of a grove distance than the Barons. Both at thinner than the OEM needle by a long shot so they will let more fuel thru. Don't know of anyone running on the 3rd slot that is a fairly lean setting Most that have gone to that slot are running two silver washers under the white spacer.

I have it on the third as per their instructions and a washer on top and another washer below plastic spacer. Any suggestions?
