As a Libertarian I agree that the GOP makes an error of listening so closely to the Christian Evangelical movement.
I don't know that the current GOP or its leadership listens to anyone other than establishment Republicans who want to manage the decay of what our country has become.
I have great personal and philosophical disdain for the current cowardly GOP leadership.
I will add,
This country, especially over the last 50 years has been moving further and further away from the Judeo/Christian values that are the foundation for true conservatism, in an effort to find a sort of free society high ground. My personal feelings, are that the "free society high ground, is part of the utopian illusion, because of simple human nature. The analogy I've read regarding "The Commons", and how they are used by the individuals in the community, illuminates this better then most.
I believe some libertarian ideas, are embraced by the left and vice a versa in the area of religion, morality, and values, precisely because of the idea that, left to our own devices, we'll do the right thing by each other. I disagree with this, simply because of the word "fair".
It could be likened to a teenager who can't wait to get out of the house to make his own rules because he/she see themselves as smarter, only to see himself returning to the beliefs of his parents as he matures, and finds out that maybe they weren't quite as stupid as he/she thought. The prodigal son parable in the New Testament, is a good example of this thinking. Life is better when your surrounded by morals, values, and people who 'really' care about you, then it is living in a pig stye of societal decay.
Please excuse those who are unteachable to the end, from my analogy. Some people just love the stench, or are to stubborn. That is free will.
We aren't where we are as a nation, because our politicians have been slaves to the religious right, and craved conservative positions on the issues. Now that we're in deep doo-doo, everybody starting to say "hey! how come the politicians, are way over there, on the left".
The center has shifted so far left in the last 50 years, that it's impossible for some democrats to even recognize their own party.
My Uncle was what could be termed a "yellow dog democrat", until the day he died. He didn't attend church, but did have very strong feelings about whether there was or wasn't a God(he was willing to error on the side of "there is a God"

. I bring him up, because he was more conservative then probably 3/4's of those who claim their conservative republicans today.
We bomb little brown men around the world(most of whom, have no compunction whatsoever about bombing and killing us, because we get in their way), because it has fallen on the United States, to be the caretakers of Liberty and Freedom.
Freedom is a delicate candle. Not a raging conflagration of emotion like that found in socialism, communism, and Islam to mention just a few. Raging fires that consume commonsense, real hope, freedom and liberty as well as most anything else of value. I think the number, is something like 23% of those living in the colonies, actually supported this nations struggle for independence.
Ours is not a selfish and self centered country. We have always been generous. Other nations helped us in our struggle to be free. Hopefully, that will never stop...because, when we as a country decide that protecting freedom and liberty isn't the responsibility of those who possess it, ..we'll all lose it.
Everybody loves the idea of minding our own business. What happens to property values(and other things), when a drug dealer or pedophile sets up shop in the neighborhood?....all of a sudden, their business, becomes your business. Hopefully. You ignore it at your own peril, if you do.
