SVS - Question 4 Years, 7 Months ago
Just a quick question for you all. Does anyone know which years are most affected with SVS?

I think the 05 was the worst year and of course that is what I have. Yes I had my bought with it but think I have it beat now. The valve guides are a tad thight and overfilling the oil cause it too.

Way I understand it, the 1700's have the most trouble,, hang tight and I am sure you will get a lot more input...

1700's mostly. Seems the 05's get it more often. Some 1600's have had it too.

They have some tight tolerances in the valve train,,, air cooled engines expand and contract alot,, they need to be wound out,,or they get carboned up..., I think Yamama sets the bikes up a little rich so they don't burn.... and an engine running too lean will acutually burn holes in the pistons... so that being said,, don't be afraid to run it up... there is a lot of good info here on the subject... I would say to get it where it hit's a good lick, and run it for a while...check your plugs,, keep track of fuel consumption if it matters to you...but above all, don't lug it...

I have to ask. What is the big issue/hype about high octane gas?

I've had the bike for 7,000 miles and so the odometer reads 15,000 now. Since I bought it, I put the premium in it all the time. It runs so good for me. I did drive it to work everyday though, 50 miles one way. So she has gotten out and gotten hot when I ride her.

The Roadies have a 8.36 to 1 compression ratio. They won't burn premium all the way. You'll carbon the cylinders up.

In a low compression ratio motor...like the R*

Hi octane being a less explosive gas under pressure...

Does not burn completely and leads to carbon fouling
